Fight For Your Right to Beer: The Best Strike Ever

I bet this thing has an awesome chilled cupholder!

To me, this sounds like a simple, happy life: You’re a brewery worker, spending your day helping to make a respectable assortment of lagers, pilsners and ales. Even better, there are coolers placed around the brewery, and you’re allowed to enjoy the fruits of your labor any time you like throughout the working day.  There’s only one rule: be responsible and don’t get drunk.  It’s a dream job for many that sounds too good to be true.

Well now it is.  You see, the workers at the the Carlsberg brewery in Copenhagen, Denmark lived this dream right up until last Thursday, when management decided to pull the worst April Fools day prank ever. They revoked this wonderful privilege and made it so workers can now only drink beer during their lunch break (which, let’s be honest here, is still pretty sweet).

The workers have decided to fight for their right to party, and have gone on strike to protest the change in policy.  800 workers went on strike on Wednesday and 250 more walked out yesterday, leading to disrupted distribution of Carlsberg beers in and around Copenhagen.

The most interesting part of the story for me is that the delivery drivers have joined the strike in sympathy for the brewery workers, even though the drivers ARE STILL ABLE TO DRINK THROUGHOUT THE DAY.  That’s right, the drivers can crack open a Carlsberg whenever they like, as long as they don’t set off the alcohol ignition locks installed in their vehicles.  Of course nobody says you can’t leave your rig running all day long, right?

To me this smacks of lawyers and insurance companies weaseling their way into somebody’s pleasant life, and I think it’s just awful.  It might be common practice in America to lawyer the fun out of everything, but it’s sad to see this killjoy infection spreading to other parts of the world.

So we say hang in there guys and gals – the Beer & Whiskey Brothers hope that your stand against corporate nannying is successful, even if your livers would disagree!

To quote Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction, “That’s it, I’m f#*king going”. Maybe I’ll try to get a job there.
