It’s International Stout Day. Woohoo?

Today is November 3rd, and that means it is International Stout Day, a special day (I’m not sure why it’s held on November 3rd) that has been deemed by someone (I’m not sure who) to celebrate this delicious style of beer (I’m not sure why it’s not Belgian Quad Day or IPA Day or Give Your Dog a Hug Day, but whatever).

So..umm..drink a stout today and…uhh…thank stout makers for making, you know, stouts and stuff.  Internationally.  Because it’s International Stout Day.

According to this online list of other inane holidays I’ve dug up, it’s also Banana Pudding Lovers Month and National Fig Week, so don’t miss out on those either.  And so you know, tomorrow is National Chicken Lady Day

I have a feeling this won’t be the last of the “fill in the blank” beer days. It’s a plot by a few young beer ladies to get the world to drink more craft beer (BeerWench and her cohorts). I’ll go along with it – gives me something to drink and talk about anyway.

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:38 am #

Yeah, nothing wrong with celebrating beer I guess…

  2. November 3, 2011 at 10:38 am #

I can’t help but sort of agree here, Jim. I mean, I don’t necessarily have a *problem* with it, but like you said, what’s the: who, what and why? I think I’ll be the first to make International 12% ABV Or Higher Bourbon Barrel-aged Imperial Stout Made With Cacao Nibs Day. Because, hell that’s what everyone else is doing, right?

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:40 am #

That sounds like my kinda holiday!

  3. November 3, 2011 at 10:43 am #

don’t care much about the “day” but I believe your brother is going to the same stout “dinner” this evening at Brewforia… should be good times!

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:55 am #

Sounds like fun. I guess any reason is a good reason for a beer dinner!

  4. November 3, 2011 at 10:44 am #

Meh. I didn’t understand IPA day and I do not understand this. Although it did give us a reason to throw a paired stout dinner tonight at work. I love me a beer dinner, so yay for that.

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:56 am #

A good excuse is all you need, right? I’m a big stout fan, so I shouldn’t complain, but I have a distaste for manufactured holidays.

  5. November 3, 2011 at 10:48 am #

Well, in honor of International Stout Day, Don and I and some other beer geeks will be attending a Stout Dinner tonight at Brewforia. Good food paired with good stouts. So, if nothing more, there is that.

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:50 am #

Ah, looks like Clayton and Marvin beat me to the stout dinner content.

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:57 am #

There are (rare) times I wish I lived in Idaho. This might be one of them. Rick has it wired up right at Brewforia!

        • November 3, 2011 at 11:59 am #

I was thinking “I hope she says yes…”

I didn’t know they did the whole polygamy thing in Idaho!

  6. November 3, 2011 at 10:49 am #

Speaking of stout, have you popped open either of those fermenters, Jim?

    • November 3, 2011 at 10:58 am #

Not yet. I was going to do it this past weekend, but the power went out on Saturday and my back went out on Sunday. So I’m left with two fermenters still full of old beer a couple of lame excuses…

  7. November 3, 2011 at 12:22 pm #

today also happens to be Cliche Day…so, in honor of this and Internat’l Stout Day, i’ll hoist up a stout and say…if’n i gott’em…i’ll be drinkin’em…

    • November 3, 2011 at 1:04 pm #

I say if you can’t beat ’em, join ’em!

  8. November 3, 2011 at 12:53 pm #

I think a lot of people are thinking too hard about this. If anything, this will dramatically cut down on the amount of time I’ll be standing in front of the fridge while deciding which bottle to pull out tonight 😉

    • November 3, 2011 at 1:03 pm #

I agree it’s no big deal, just mostly silly and kind of random. Plus, I’m not in the mood for a stout today! 😦

      • Don
        November 3, 2011 at 1:05 pm #

Liar! You’re always in the mood for a stout! If you want Mad Elf, I think you should back it with a big dark stout! You kinda have to…Its International Stout day! Your hands are tied.

  9. November 3, 2011 at 1:10 pm #

I celebrated last night as my favorite place to get a beer had CBS on tap and someone showed up with a bottle of The Bruery’s Black Tuesday. So, I’m good on stouts at the moment.

    • November 3, 2011 at 1:32 pm #

Ah, you came pre-loaded for the holiday – nice!

      • November 3, 2011 at 1:53 pm #

I like that. Pre-loaded for the holiday.

  10. November 3, 2011 at 1:30 pm #

I think all of the National (insert your favorite beer type here) Days are more akin to the old excuse to have Happy Hour any hour of the day you want it (i.e. “It’s five o’clock somewhere in the world!”). Luckily we have Left Hand’s new nitro Milk Stout in a bottle on hand, and yes, it’s very good and creamy. Today also gives me an excuse to drink an entire stout rather than takes sips off of the wife’s while I drink something else.

    • November 3, 2011 at 1:35 pm #

I never need an excuse to drink a stout, just an opportunity. 🙂

  11. November 3, 2011 at 1:53 pm #

Any excuse to drink a Dragon’s Milk… or Founder’s Breakfast Stout… and before the end of the week?! 😀

    • November 3, 2011 at 2:18 pm #

I actually had a FBS last night – does that count?

  12. November 3, 2011 at 2:58 pm #

My regular suppliers are still trying to unload their IPA and other summer beers so, in general, stouts are still a few weeks away. But I know my son-in-law will bring plenty of them for Thanksgiving so I’ll make that my personal stout appreciation day.

    • November 3, 2011 at 3:28 pm #

It is kinda odd that Stout Day is so early in the Stout season. If you’re a bar or restaurant, trying to have a stout event, a lot of the big imperial/special/seasonal release stouts aren’t quite out yet.

      • November 3, 2011 at 3:36 pm #

Yeah, their timing is a bit off, but since I enjoy a good stout–especially oatmeal stout–anytime of the year, I’m not gonna let it bother me too much.

        • November 3, 2011 at 3:44 pm #

Agreed! Regardless of the time of year, I don’t need any prodding to drink a stout either. :^)

    • November 3, 2011 at 3:57 pm #

For me, Stout season ends in May and picks up again in July, when I’m sick of all those damn IPA’s!

      • November 3, 2011 at 4:13 pm #

Well that might be goin’ a bit far…I’m awful fond of Ranger and Dale’s.

        • November 3, 2011 at 4:20 pm #

I’m a big Dale’s fan too, but I really get to craving it around football season. Dunno why, but it never fails that I’m drinking Dale’s early in the season.

Wait a minute. I take exception to this comment. We do a lot of things right around here. You don’t just get to come in and lob a grenade and walk away unscathed. First off, US News or USA Today OR WSJ are journalism sites. If you want journalism go there! This is a fun lifestyle blog, and I can think of only one that has any sort of journalistic chops at all and that is Beernews.org. This is an alcohol related entertainment and lifestyle blog, sometimes more, but nothing less. Your comment was uncalled for and rude.

I had, altogether, about three swallows of the wife’s Imperial Stout at Renegade Brewing last night, the rest of the night I had an excellent Double IPA that was nearly as dark as a stout. Let’s see three snifters at 9.5% ABV… ya, I’m a little bleary eyed also this morning.

        • Don
          November 4, 2011 at 10:21 am #

Will, what I wasn’t prepared for was how this diet I’m on has affected my ability to absorb and process alcohol. I’d say total I had about 2.5 snifters of stout over about a 2.5 hour period, but it was initially on an empty stomach, and While I did eat something, it was WAY less than I would have eaten normally. Yeah, the alcohol kinda hit me hard. Not really hangin’ today, but more just slow and dim, so pretty much normal this morning.

        • November 4, 2011 at 10:36 am #

The eating thing definitely contributed to my state also. The wife had taken some bison out to thaw for dinner, so we ended up just munching on some chips and cheetos instead of ordering something more substantial from the food truck that was there. Luckily, we stopped before things got out of hand, I’ll leave that for tonight while I’m cozy in my chair at home watching the Avs hopefully slaughtering the Dallas Stars. 😉

It’s good to go all-in for the holidays, Steelhands.

I had just finished working 27 hours in 2 days…so I only managed a single bottle of North Coast’s Old Rasputin…but what a bottle it was…

    • November 4, 2011 at 6:17 pm #

At least you got a taste of something good! And you should smell how wonderful…er…never mind! 😉

  17. November 4, 2011 at 10:33 pm #

Well, I’m a day late and a dollar short (as usual), but I did lay in some stouts today, including Lancaster Milk Stout, the Ten Fidy, Southern Tier Imperial Oatmeal Stout and St. Peter’s Cream Stout. But then I did a what-the-hell and bought a 12oz bottle of DFH’s World Wide Stout–whoowee what a ride! Since its nearly 20% alcohol, I didn’t expect it to taste like beer–and it didn’t. The closest I can come to a description is a creamy fortified wine–perhaps a ruby port. And as long as I think of it in those terms, its very enjoyable. Its definitely not something I’d want to chug–a-lug though. I let it warm for about 30 minutes and then poured about a 3rd of the bottle into one of my wide-mouthed beer glasses (good for detecting the aroma) and then recapped the remainder for later.

There’s already an IPA Day! It was in August sometime. I imbibed many. ‘Twas a great day.
