I have benefited from the generosity of beer nerds on number of occasions, and I am thankful. Folks have shared tastes of Sam Adam’s Utopias, lunatic beers from Brew Dog, and, most recently, Pliny the Elder. These are all beers I wouldn’t have tasted without a little help from my friends. Thanks guys.
As Don and I were recently sipping on Pliny with Chad the Beer Poet and Rick from Brewforia, we hit upon the topic of “ungettables”: beers that everyone has heard of, but few have tried.
It seems that everyone has a different list of priorities of what they most covet when it comes to rare beers. Right now Id have to say that BrewDog’s End of History tops my list of beers I’d like to sample. Not just because it’s rare, but also because I’d like to taste the beer I’ve spent so much time bitching about to see if I’m right or wrong. The proof is in the pudding, right?

I know it isn’t super rare, but I can’t get it. I want to try Pliny the Elder just because. So much damn hype, I have to know for myself.
I understand completely, Scooter. I just about jumped for joy when Rick at Brewforia broke out the bottle of Pliny the Elder. It’s a good beer for sure and it was great to cross it off my list.
Nothing is on my list @ the moment really!

Shut up Scott! and Jim, you are a Brat, but I always knew that. Ungettables for me don’t really involve beer. I’m so new to beer I just try new stuff all the time. Yeah there is stuff that I can’t get, a lot of it, but It doesn’t really bother me that much. What does bother me is there are “ungettables” for whiskey. There are so many whiskeys out there that I can’t get. Here are three that currently top my list. George T. Stagg-161 proof and heaven in a bottle (so I have heard), Noah’s Mill-114 proof and lots of burn sweetness and spice. Great stuff, but I can’t buy any. Finally Templeton Rye. They are only sold in a few midwestern states and I’ve heard from friends that go back there for bird and deer hunting every year that it is great stuff and keeps getting better year after year.
Sounds like you need to do you own “ungettables” post for whiskey nerds, Don. Meanwhile, stop mucking up mine with whiskey talk!!
I’m with you Don. It seems like there’s something new every week @ Brewforia to try. I’m finding it hard to keep up with what’s on the shelf. We just got some Victory in last week, for instance (don’t laugh, Jim). So, I’m not pining too hard for things I can’t get at the moment. Although, I have been a little curious about Brooklyn Brewery’s specialty stuff. And I kinda like that there are those ungettables out there. Makes for a nice surprise when you get your hands on something special.
I agree Chad. I’ve had their Chocolate Stout from Brooklyn, and of course they had the black Weisse beer that was their collaboration with a German Brewery in at Brewforia, but I haven’t ever had Black Ops and I guess that is pretty special.
I agree to a point, and that’s why I don’t spend $$$ on eBay trying to get my hands on Dark Lord or any other “ungettables” as you called them, Chad. There’s plenty of new stuff to try at my local beer store – the selection is almost endless. Why spend the money?
That said, there are still a few beers I’ve heard a lot about and would jump at the chance to try. Hopefully we’ll check a couple off the list at GABF.
By the way, Dave over at http://www.DrunkenPolack.com publishes his list on his site. Some pretty obscure stuff on that list.
I think the nerdier you are, the cooler your list of dream beers. I think Dave really knows his stuff.

Finally something you can get in Idaho!
I know it’s not that hard to find but I’ve been wanting to try Hopslam. Maybe some New Glarus, their fruit beers are supposed to be tops in the world.
I do, however, have a SUPER rare bottle of Flying Dog’s Oak Aged Gonzo jacked up on Brett. I’m just waiting for the right moment to try it.
Enjoy that Gonzo, it is a rare find indeed. Sounds like you need to take a trip to the midwest. Jim and I had an Enigma from New Glarus, their Oak Aged Cherry Ale, and it was sublime. What an outstanding brew.
I had a shot at Hopslam in Milwaukee but didn’t pull the trigger – I regret that. But I did get my hands on New Glarus’ Enigma, which is brewed with cherries and is wonderful. I also have had their Cherry Stout which was mind-blowing

Westvleteren… all of them. I doubt my pocket book will allow me a trip to Belgium any time soon. As far as domestics go, I don’t know… I’ll just figure it out on my next business trip.
Peter Kennedy from Simply Beer gave me a taste of Westy 12 during one of his Beer Brawl podcasts. It was supposed to be the party piece / grand finale, but there was something wonky about the bottle he had, like it had gotten very hot and cold a number of times. I guess that happens sometimes when you buy from eBay. It was a bit disappointing, but I also got to try a Pannepot 2007 and that’s an amazing beer, so the evening wasn’t a complete wash.
I still feel like I haven’t tasted the real Westy 12 yet, so that’s something to look forward to.
