When Was The Last Time a Beer or Whiskey Blew Your Mind?

bulbA libation revelation is a simple but magnificent event, when you have the perfect drink under the perfect circumstances. When this occurs, you taste the beverage in a new and wonderful way, and your newfound appreciation carries forward to every time you have that drink. I’ve had a handful of these moments over the past couple of years and it’s one of the best things about being a craft beer lover.

Last time this happened to me was over the summer. It was a hot Friday evening at the end of a pretty brutal week at work. I had been stuck in traffic trying to get home, and by the time I got there I was hot, cranky and ready for the weekend. I changed into shorts, went to the beer fridge and cracked open a Stone Arrogant Bastard Ale. It wasn’t what I was in the mood for, but it’s what I had and I needed a beer.

When I had that first sip, the flavor absolutely exploded in my mouth. I could taste the beer with a clarity I hadn’t experienced before, and the flavor tickled my brain in the most delightful way. It was the perfect beer for that moment, and it changed the way I tasted Arrogant Bastard forever. It became my go-to beer for hot summer nights, and every time I’ve had it since, I’m taken back to that wonderful moment.

    This has happened to me a couple of times, but I will tell you about the first time. I wasn’t actually of legal age yet, but I suppose that doesn’t really matter any more. I was playing softball on a hot day in August in Wisconsin, and someone showed up with a couple cases of beer. To be honest I really don’t remember what kind. Probably Schmidts. We were playing and drinking, and not drinking to get drunk like many teens do. But it was hot and the beer was truly refreshing. As the day wore on I realyized that things were getting funnier and funnier and pretty soon I began to loose a little coordination. Anyway not much more to this story, but it was the first time I actually drank beer and appreciated its flavor and refreshing qualities without the intent of getting snockered like many teens do. We had a great time in the sun playing ball all afternoon and by the end of it we were all pretty high and having a ball. But the refreshing quality and the flavor was transformative for me and my attitude towards beer.

        What I didn’t say was I was visiting from when we lived in Connecticut, So I was actually 16 at the time, and the legal age was 18 back then. So I was just a shade under the legal limit, and Dude remember this was Wisconsin! I think the practical age was more like 12. Way more than that!

          I guess 16 is better than 14, Don, especially when the drinking age was 18.

          Milwaukee is a beer city, for sure. I remember mom knitting us Pabst Blue Ribbon scarves for the cold Wisconsin winters. I actually walked to school as a six year old with PBR logos wrapped around my neck.

          Looking back, I think that explains a lot. 🙂

          It was also the first beer I ever tasted. From the can. Warm. It kept me on the straight-and-narrow for years!

    Another one for me was the first time I had a Long Trail Double Bag. We were hosting my sister-in-law’s baby shower and Caryn had bought the beer. The guy at the beer store suggested Double Bag and so she added it to the mix. I was prepared to hate it (because it wasn’t my suggestion) but I remember the first sip was sweet and malty and smooth. I was eating cheddar and Triscuits at the time, and the tastes worked perfectly together. From that point on, my go-to football snack was Triscuits, Wisconsin Cheddar and Double Bag. Makes me hungry (and thirsty) just thinking about it!

      I know that’s not true because Dad would never drink warm Pabst it would have given him another heart attack! Unless maybe he was trying to kill you….

    Two times come to mind – 1) Back in the late 90’s I took a road trip to Lousiville to meet a friend for the weekend. We had dinner at Bluegrass Brewing Company, and after dinner I felt compeled to order the $16 glass of Bookers Bourbon. My father was a whiskey drinker, but pretty much your basic Jack, Jim or Wild Turkey, so that was what I thought all bourbons tasted like. When those flavors of oak, leather and vanilla from the Bookers hit my palate, I thought I had died and gone to heaven! By the end of the night, the whole table had switched from beer to Bookers as we sampled it on the rocks, neat and with a splash. It changed my whole attitude towards “American” whiskies. 2) The first time I had a Death and Taxes Black Beer from Moonlight Brewing Company (must have been 12 years ago or so). I was not familiar with a lagered black beer (schwarzbier) and I my eyes said “porter”. Once I tried the first sip, I knew my eyes were wrong. The flavor was rich, but surpringly light bodied for such a dark beer. To this day, Death and Taxes is my favorite beer, and I am always, always pleased when I run into Brian the owner/brewmaster at one of my Bay Area watering holes.

      Your Bookers experience reminds me of my first sip of Chimay. Before it I was a specialty macrobrew guy, with Bass being my favorite beer. After that sip, my eyes were opened to a whole world of tastes I never knew existed. It was a real epiphany for me. Those are special moments.

      The Moonlight Death & Taxes sounds wonderful. I don’t think we get them out east, but I’ll keep an eye open.

      William, Thanks for commenting. I hope you post here often. I too can remember the first Time I had a Bookers. I was in a hotel bar in Missoula Montana, and my buddy had ordered it on the rocks. He took a sip and his eyes lit up, and he said try this! I did, and it was amazing! The tastes as you describe are accurate for my palate as well, but I would also include the wonderful finish that a 124 proof bourbon has. Long and slow burn, even with rocks! I also remember notes of barrel char in there, especially as the ice began to melt a little. Fortunately for me that part of the west has a little better prices and it was only $9.00 for the pour. I try to get one whenever I am out now because it is such a great product. Another Beam product I just love is Knob Creek. It was the first bourbon that opened my eyes to how great small batch bourbon could be.

    I think that most recently that George T. Stagg blew my mind (on the whiskey side). I remember last year when Nate and I went to Dark Lord Day at Three Floyds, Dark Lord blew my mind…it was my first taste of that beer. It’s absolutely wonderful. More recently, I thought Brabant by Avery was mind-blowing.

        You do need to try it. I’ll certainly ask him if he can send you one…but I know that he basically ordered it. However, I can maybe bring a bit when I visit Idaho. I’ll make it a point to save some and you can try it when I come. Is that a deal?

          Sounds like a great idea Mike. We can do a pub crawl too. I’ll check out local places that serve a lot of regional craft brews. We also have some places that do some pretty good brews of their own too. I just had some pretty awful micros here in Lewiston, Idaho. Really bad stuff. Makes Bud look full bodied and flavorful! One brew tasted like sucking on old sweat socks that have soured in a hot gym locker. YUK! I think Pyramid Heff will be on tap tomorrow!
