Canadian Beer Hockey in Action

alcohockey

The original “Alcohockey” table crafted by a pair of cold-weather brah’s.

About a month ago, I wrote a piece for TODAY.com about “Alcohockey,” a combination of beer pong and air hockey created by two bored Canadian university students.

The idea is simple – take an old air hockey table, cut six cup-sized holes in front of each goal, place red Solo cups into said holes, and fill them with beer (and not water like their thin-blooded cousins to the south).  Grab a paddle, drop a puck, and drink when it falls into one of your cups.  Fun!

Now one of my fellow NBC staffers – this guy Jimmy-something – has been inspired (prolly by my awesome article) to build a replica, and he’s made this nice little video of it.

He’s matched up against some fella named after a male duck or some off-brand cakes or a nice hotel in Chicago.  Whatever.

Anyway, behold the glory of Canadian Beer Hockey!  No word yet if they’ll be making an arcade version of this, but there certainly are air hockey tables in bars across the country that could benefit from the transformation.

Whaddya think – a fun time or just plain stoopid?

Stoopid. That doesn’t mean it won’t catch on.

I doubt it – too much effort – it’s easier to stack six cups on a table. Plus we don’t have these in our basements, we have ping pong tables, which is at the root of our version of beer pong.

When I think of Canada the first thing that comes to mind is Rush… then Triumph (long retired, tho Rik Emmett is still around)… I’ve heard that Montreal has an awesome craft beer scene, but Molson and Labatt are the only Canadian beers that come to mind off the top of my head… not bad for washing down Buffalo wings 🙂 I’m only about 3 hours from Toronto, I’ve got to get a passport…

I’ll take air hockey over ping pong balls any day of the week 🙂
