About a week ago when I got wind that Bud was going to make their big launch of Platinum during the Super Bowl, I thought it was a risky and short sighted plan. Sure you would get a lot of eyes on the screen, but the Weego commercial is where Bud Light drinkers live, not some high end high res fru fru commercial. I am thinking that I should give Bud a big “I Told You So!” but fact is I kept mum, so I can’t say that.
As a matter of fact I’m guessing this was the worst beer advertisement during a Super Bowl of all time. Now I have no information to back that up, because I don’t know where other beer commercials have ranked over the years, but it is hard to think that any other beer ad in the history of Superbowl beer ads did worse than 49th and 51st, but that is where the Platinum Ads came in. I want to thank Adam over at Beernews.org for the stats. You can watch the incredibly boring BL Platinum ad over there too, if you are so inclined.
By contrast the Weego ad with the little dog that kept fetching the Bud Light was really cute, and had a great rescue dog message embedded into it. That commercial was voted as the #1 Superbowl commercial this year. I’m guessing that Weego’s previous owner was a craft beer drinker, and just couldn’t stand Weego’s incessant fetching of Bud Light piss water. 😉
For my money the E-trade Baby ad was my favorite. Especially the part at the end when the e-trade baby asks his buddy what he is doing in the Maternity Ward baby room, and his reply is classic…speed dating!
Here are where the ads are trending right now from USA Today. Bad news is the BL Platinum Ads continue to drop in the rankings! YIKES
