I don’t follow hockey, but I know that when you score three times in a game it’s called a hat trick, and that’s exactly what I did over the holiday at a little hole in the wall beer store I stumbled into. It was one of those magical beer (and in this case, whiskey) moments where you leave the store grinning from ear to ear, wishing you had someone with you who could appreciate your good fortune. Instead, I had to wait to share it here with you folks.
In this case, I scored three of my favorite hard-to-find adult beverages in one place: Four bottles of Schlafly Reserve Imperial Stout (2008!), four bottles of New Holland’s Dragon’s Milk (I forgot what a bargain this stuff is) and the last bottle this particular store will see of Stranahans Colorado Whiskey, which is no longer distributed in New Jersey. That’s a pretty good haul, and one I don’t think I’ll be able to repeat.
I’ve purchased the Schlafly’s here in the past, but I thought they were tapped out. Turns out I was wrong. I had also heard rumors of Dragon’s Milk being sold there in the past, but I had never seen it on the shelves. This time it was there. And I had never checked the whiskey selection here before, and you could imagine my excitement when I saw one lone bottle of Stranahan’s on the shelf. The stars were definitely aligned.
So far I’ve gone through one bottle each of the Dragon’s Milk and Schlafly’s and a few nips of the Stranahans. I think ‘ll save the rest to enjoy over the holidays, when I’m off between Christmas and New Years. These treats combined with the stash of Mad Elf I still have will make my holidays very happy indeed!

Aw, ya coulda at least used a photo of the Black Hawks!
Agreed!
I assume that’s some sort of hockey organization?
Were you really born in Chicago?
Now that just hurts, Wayne!
You deserved it for that comment ’bout the Hawks. May Bobby Hull lay a slapshot in your hoard of Mad Elf!
At least I won’t feel it 🙂
Thanks for saving some for the next guy.
Because you’re planning a trip to New Jersey…
I was thinking about detouring over my Christmas vacation…I guess not now…I’ll stick to MA, VT, and NH.
I left some last time. This time I told the guy “I don’t want to clean you out, I just want them all!”
Good choice, you’re going to nice beer states, why go to NJ?
Ouch, Greg. Ouch.
I got 2 bottle of King Henry (stood in line). Found a bottle of Michters Bourbon and Kentucky Vintage Bourbon 17yr. A hat trick of my own it would seem!
Very nice!
Did the Budweiser Clydesdales bring the beer?
I saw about 200 people were in line for it and they sold out of a lot of other bottles early. Were there some angry people in Chicago that day?
Haha! The Bourbon stout went to the first 60 people so yes there were some disgruntled including myself. But I got my two bottles of King Henry, had a sample and then went to Revolution for their Barrel Aged Stout and it was really nice along with a fine lunch!
What are your thoughts on Revolution? I’ve been a handful of times and have enjoyed every beer. Bacon Fat Popcorn….nom nom nom.
Really good. My first time and I would highly reccomend it.
As a hockey fan, I was really hoping more for the hockey tie in here. You have disappointed me on some level; however, congrats on your grab.
I guess I should have worked in”eh?” and “aboot” a few times…
You should check out the party source’s website http://www.thepartysource.com/express/results.php?t=class&s=MICROBREW+BEER
Has New Holland Drangon’s Milk and the Schlafly Reserve both in stock and New Albanian (great brewery) and I got free shipping today.
What NABC beers do you like? The head brewer is a good friend of mine and he enjoys hearing both the positive and negatives of his beers. They actually support my racing habits.
Yakima Rye is my favorite, Elector is probably my second. I loved finding this place on Facebook one day and realized it was on my route to Paoli Peaks for skiing. I make sure all my friends travelling throughout the Lousville area to check them out. Then last year I realized an old bartender of ours (Jeremy) works there.
Just noticed they don’t ship to Idaho, but they do to New York if you’re close. Or ship it to Don and visit him.
Meant to say New Jersey dammit.
I understood, Oliver. Unfortunately, no one ships booze to NJ!
I’m absolutely loving
1. The hockey reference…a sport that really by default comes with beer.
2. That you used a Pens pic here…I think Staal would be proud he’s on this site. Sorry Hawks fans, maybe next time Kane can make an appearance?
