5 Ways to Get Women to Fall in Love with our Beer and Whiskey Blog

When it comes to gender, our readership is a little lopsided.  Of the 12,000 or so folks who came through the site over the past month, 68% of our were dudes and 32% were ladies.  This is a bit less balanced than other spirits-related blogs, which tend to be about 55% men to 45% women.  We need to do better, so I’ve come up with 5 ways to get the fairer sex to fall in love with the Beer and Whiskey Brothers.

1. Cosmos, Appletini’s and Cupcake Vodka: If there’s one thing cable TV has taught me about girls, it’s that they love fruity, colorful drinks.  Sex on a Beach, all sorts of fruity-tini’s, a dirty sanchez, you name it – ladies enjoy sweet, fun cocktails.  [EDIT: Reading that list back, I think I got one of the drinks wrong].  Anyway, maybe we need to get sexy with the mixology around here to improve our draw with the womenfolk.

2. Don’t Let Don Comment: Don has a knack of pissing off feminists.  Just look at our pal Zac, who originally came to this site and went nuts over Don’s misogynistic musings about the Witches Wit label. And he’s a dude!  Let’s face it, Don is half bear, half caveman and half Al Bundy.  That’s 150% wrong! At least that’s how he manages to come across when interacting on the site with women who have a feminist streak.  It’s uncanny.  In real life, he’s respectful, supportive and loving to the ladies, but these attributes don’t seem to make it from his brain out through his fingertips.  Perhaps the banhammer should fall upon him!

3. Be Better Listeners: My wife loves it when we sit down over a couple of beers and she has the chance to vent about work, about her busy life as a mom, about my shortcomings, you name it.  With that in mind, I think we’d attract a lot more female readers if we typed less and listened more.  So here it goes.

If you’re a lady, I have a question for you – How’s it going with your friend at work?

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . . . . . .

. . . . . . . .

. . . .

. .

.

Really?  You were totally right about her all along!  Oh, and I love your shoes!!

4. Kittens and puppies: Girls love cute things, and what’s cuter than these little critters?  Awww…you’re welcome, ladies…

5. More Don Beefcake!:  Let’s face it – sex sells, and there’s nothing the ladies like better than a little bit of the old beefcake! To get the hearts of the fairer sex racing, and maybe a few of the fellas who are playing for the other team (or both teams), here’s just a sample of the lusciousness Don is sporting under those sexy flannel shirts he favors.  Growr!  Can’t go wrong with that, ladies.  Amirite or amirite?!  🙂

If you’re one of our female readers, let us know your thoughts – will these smart tactics lure you in?  If you’re a fella who’s good with the ladies, is their anything we missed?  As always, let us know below!

I know I would like to see more puppies drinking whiskey. Just sayin’

    • October 26, 2011 at 12:57 pm #

You just gotta take the pictures before they puke and/or die.

Puking puppies are a turn off!

Puking dead puppies are even worse!

Wow. P90X is really working for Don. In all honesty, what about some guest posts by your female readers/bloggers/imbibers? Maybe some beer/food/dinner party pairing ideas too? Just a thought.

    We love you!

    • October 26, 2011 at 12:57 pm #

We love GPO, too. Thanks for the input – we’d love a female POV (but don’t hold your breath for dinner party ideas!).

Are you guys split even between the sexes, or are you lopsided with the ladies?

      • October 26, 2011 at 12:59 pm #

Our blog/facebook receives more female readership while twitter seems to attract the dudes. Go figure.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:00 pm #

Twitter is more wham-bam-thank-you-ma’am, so it makes sense! 😉

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:04 pm #

What is it about dudes and instant gratification?! Don’t answer that…..

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:08 pm #

          🙂

I second the food and beer pairing idea. I’ve found it’s a good way to introduce women to beer. And more kitties and puppies!

I lost it on the “Don’t let Don comment” part…good stuff!

    • October 26, 2011 at 12:58 pm #

      It’s so true it’s actually a little depressing…

      😉

        STFU!

  4. October 26, 2011 at 1:06 pm #

Your ideas are akin to slapping pink labels on industrial rice-adjunct lagers with a touch of sweetness and calling it “Chick” or “Broad” or whatever market researchers think will attract the ladies. 😉

On a serious note, how do you know that other sites have a 55/45 split? From what I’ve seen in the comments of other blogs, yours receives a fair amount of attention from women.

    • October 26, 2011 at 1:10 pm #

I got the stats here FWIW. These sites aren’t always rock-solid, but this one seems to be pretty decent: http://www.quantcast.com/beerandwhiskeybros.com

      • October 26, 2011 at 1:11 pm #

Right, I get that you know your own stats, but I was wondering what made you say that most sites get 55/45. I would be shocked if the average beer or whiskey blog had numbers like that.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:26 pm #

I looked up our gender stats there and then compared them to beernews.org and a couple other bigger fish.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:29 pm #

Yeah, I just did the same. Color me surprised. Maybe it’s the wood paneling or all the bear talk.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:43 pm #

That and the fact that Don sprays the site every morning to mark his territory…

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:32 pm #

You know, getting more women into craft beer does seem to be a semi-hot topic on the interwebs. You could do more posts on what the women in your lives think of all this. Do a tasting with your partner or serve a bunch of her friends beer to see what they think. My beer club only includes like 5% female membership. So, 32% isn’t awful.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:44 pm #

Yeah, maybe. My wife loves craft beer, and I know lots of ladies who are getting nerdy with it.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:36 pm #

We get heat occasionally about watering down craft beer for women and being anti-feminist. Which I don’t understand – I write about what is interesting to me and my friends and we organize events we want to attend.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:43 pm #

People will bitch about anything. That’s the answer to that!

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:49 pm #

They do! But we had an awesome turn out for Pints and Poses: a yoga session in a brewery (on a night they were closed to the public) followed by a tasting and discussion where we debated the issue of how craft beer fits in with being healthy and active. It’s stuff like that we do to attract women who might *want* to get into craft beer but meeting up in a bar with no craft beer background or knowledge can kind of creep them out.

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:54 pm #

Sounds like a cool evening – yoga and beer – sign me up!

Promise I would NOT be like this guy:

      • October 26, 2011 at 1:14 pm #

Even mine are 59/41 and I’m the resident feminist.

  5. October 26, 2011 at 1:22 pm #

Maybe you could somehow incorporate roller-disco into the blog? Seems like these guys have the right idea:

    Worth a shot.

    • October 26, 2011 at 1:41 pm #

      …amphibian…

  6. October 26, 2011 at 1:28 pm #

I would definitely read more posts if they as thoughtful as “Ladies of the World.”

    • October 26, 2011 at 1:42 pm #

So I guess you’ll not be reading more posts. We do funny okay, but “thoughtful”…umm…not so much!

      • October 26, 2011 at 1:46 pm #

I can’t lie…posts like these about Christina Hendricks I skip because A) I’m tired of looking at her boobs in every photo of her attached to a story and B) I don’t drink scotch.

        Christina Hendricks: Scotch is Sexy

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:48 pm #

That’s so funny, because I read them for exactly the opposite reasons. 🙂

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:50 pm #

……and now you know why your female readership might be lacking. 😉

        • October 26, 2011 at 1:54 pm #

Well look who posted that one – the caveman!

Still, it’s cool to think that some women find Scotch sexy, especially someone with as much feminine gravitas as Ms. Hendricks.

  7. October 26, 2011 at 1:56 pm #

HA! I agree with Girls Pint Out. A guest post by a female beer/whisky lover might help women see that women enjoy these tasty libations, too.

    Or just more Don Beefcake.

    • October 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm #

MORE DON BEEFCAKE!!!! And a photo of Ryan Reynolds drinking a Brooklyn Brewing Co beer couldn’t hurt either. Ya know, if we’re going to go all hot people drinking beer/whiskey – better make it equal opportunity.

      • October 26, 2011 at 2:05 pm #

What?! Beefcake Don isn’t enough to satisfy all of your womanly desires?!!

    • October 26, 2011 at 2:00 pm #

Maybe we’ll do both and be double-awesome!

  8. October 26, 2011 at 2:05 pm #

Seriously, I hope we gave you some ideas/insight – it’s all fun and games but I understand you want some feedback, too. I just want to help you out! (hope you didn’t think I was being rude or offending at all)

    • October 26, 2011 at 2:09 pm #

Not at all. We’ve had female guest posts in the past and they’ve been interesting. Now we just gotta figure out where to get posters…

  9. October 26, 2011 at 2:11 pm #

Ya know, there’s this female beer group – they do yoga sessions and stuff? You should hit them up sometime. I bet they’d be on board. Maybe.

  10. October 26, 2011 at 2:13 pm #

Don’t listen to the girls… I vote you increase the Christina Hendricks boob pics…. just sayin

  11. October 26, 2011 at 2:38 pm #

So there are no images of Ryan Reynolds drinking craft beer … the best I could find was DAN AYKROYD? Barf.

Do I need to pose shirtless drinking beer and looking through my Months of Don calendar?

      • October 26, 2011 at 7:16 pm #

        Yes. Yes you do.

  12. October 26, 2011 at 2:38 pm #

Just kidding… I just followed @girlspintout on my twitter… Gotta dig women who appreciate good beer.

    • October 26, 2011 at 2:41 pm #

Awww, thanks Haas! Good thing it’s not during The Bachelor season! We get a little um, opinionated and mouthy. Enjoy the tweets!

  13. October 26, 2011 at 2:46 pm #

Ohhh God… You’re killin me with the bachelor stuff….lol

  14. October 26, 2011 at 4:41 pm #

I love you guys and I’m a girl. You guys are great!

    • October 26, 2011 at 4:43 pm #

Thanks for loving us Molly, especially Don!! 😉

Did you score 4 touchdowns in one game for Polk High?

  15. October 27, 2011 at 7:59 am #

    More wittiness. Girls like wit.

I like Cristina Hendricks, so that didn’t bug me at all. At least it wasn’t a post about a “sub-size-0 with silicone boobs and no talent” chick drinking whiskey. Or just holding a bottle of whiskey. 🙂

Fewer posts about sterotypes about women?! Some of us hate fruity drinks and gossip, and go out of our way to punt small fluffy animals. 😉

Curiosity helps. How about “10 things that your man wants you to know about his beer, but won’t tell you” or “Using the flavor wheel to improve your marriage”?

    • October 27, 2011 at 8:29 am #

Brendan might be on to something. Actually writing posts for women might be your in.

      • October 27, 2011 at 10:33 am #

Hmmm…maybe that’ll do it. I just have to keep Don away from them!!
