Whatcha Drinkin’ This Weekend?: Football-Is-Back! Edition

I’m happy to say that we’ve suffered through the lockout, the finger pointing and the posturing and bigtime pro football is back for most of us (sorry Peyton).  Last night’s game between the Packers and Saints was a great start to the season and it even ended the right way, with a victory for the Pack, our family’s official home team.

I think the Packers will continue to win, and I’m predicting a Packers vs. Jets Superbowl, which will pit Don’s favorite team (the bratwurst bunch) versus my favorite team (the one with the GQ quarterback).  In the end, my Jets will reign supreme and Don will be so disheartened by the loss that he’ll quit this blog in anger and shame.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves – there are lots of games to be played yet and lots of beers to be paired with the match ups.

This weekend I’m going to start the season with something light and crisp, watching Sunday night’s Jets-Cowboys game while enjoying a Prima Pils or perhaps a Dale’s Pale Ale.  I’ll pair it with chips and guac, saving the stouts and the heavier treats for when the weather turns cold and the trees get naked.  At least that’s the plan – I’ll probably wind up gripping a Yeti by the second quarter of Sunday’s game.  Maybe I’ll even have a nip of the Knob Creek Single Barrel my wife picked up the other day.    😉

How about you?  Any grand plans for celebrating the return of Earth’s greatest sport?  As always, let us know below, and for you non-Jets-fans, I’m sorry your team’s not going to be Champions this year!

Pack will repeat! You heard it here first. Jets, if they even make it into the playoffs this year, will be humiliated by the Patriots in the AFC Championship game. However this year to celebrate their run in the playoffs Coach Ryan will pay for pedicures for the entire team while he watches and films it with his iPhone…Awkward.

Why do you think he was drawn to the sport in the first place? Because his father was a coach, or because it has “foot” in the name?!

Bwahaha I forgot about the foot fetish.

I will drink what i ALWAYS drink: Henry McKenna bourbon. But as for football, I can take it our leave it, and most times I leave it.

Jerry, it took all I could to “Approve” your comment, being as you don’t watch football, but seeing that you drink McKenna you can’t be all bad! 😉 Thanks for stopping by.

That’s how I feel about baseball, hockey, soccer, basketball and every other sport that isn’t football. Most times I leave them as well.

My wife and I are attending some etiquette dinner (for her MBA class) Saturday night at the KY Derby Museum….open bar bitches! I’m assuming they won’t have good beer, so chances are I’ll be drinking Woodford or Makers neat.

Sunday, my beloved Bears will probably get pummeled by the Falcons. I’ll be drinking a Schlafly Pumpkin or some of my homebrew Plumpkin Pie ale. Embrace the gourd.

    • September 9, 2011 at 10:38 am #

Go with gourd, John. Go with gourd.

She would never say such a thing, proving she doesn’t really know me that well.

I will be cheering on the Philadelphia Eagles at my local watering hole. I’ll probably nurse some Odell IPA or Upslope Brown Ale while parrying any “Dream Team” or “dog-killer” insults directed at me by jealous Broncos fans. Should I ask why the Broncos’ best fullback is listed as a third-string QB, or does that cross the line?

    • September 9, 2011 at 10:41 am #

I think that’s acceptable, Alex. Maybe work in something about him playing the “missionary” position under Brady Quinn as well. Not quite there yet, but I’m sure you can make something out of it…

If you’ve seen his girlfriend/fiance, I’d do it any way she asked me to…

Quarterback? My beloved Broncos don’t have no stinkin’ QB, just a bunch of guys trying to be QBs. It looks like another season of waiting til next year. 😉

I’ll probably be drinking some more of Stone’s Ruination I picked up and trying to decide why I’m not all that impressed by it. That will be Sunday since the Broncs don’t play until Monday, the wife picked up some more of Bristol’s Compass that I’ll have in addition to the Racer 5 I have. Saturday we’ll be at Renegade’s Grand Opening Party, enjoying some small batch stuff, yum!

      • September 9, 2011 at 1:18 pm #

Hey, Orton is pretty decent; it’s just a shame he can’t get out of Tebow’s shadow.

Ruination doesn’t really do it for me either; I really want to like it. Have fun at Renegade; it seems like a cool place. Have you been to Denver Beer Co. yet? It’s a pretty cool space and the beer is awfully tasty.

        • September 9, 2011 at 1:57 pm #

Orton’s good outside of the Red Zone, but once he’s inside the twenty, he get’s turnover fever.

Denver Beer Co is great, got there just before the place got packed on opening night. I agree that the beers are tasty. Might be a good place for Don, Jim, and the gang to visit when they’re out here for GABF!

With any luck (the bad kind) you’ll be in the running for Andrew Luck.

But I think the Colts are gonna beat you to the bottom!

Eagles will be bringing the pain this year, and I will enjoy watching it by pairing my Sierra Nevada Tumbler with Chips and dip.

    • September 9, 2011 at 3:59 pm #

They’ll certainly be fun to watch…until Uncle Rico has to come in for an injured Vick…

Currently watching my ‘Skins kill the Giants!

Unfortunately, I’m doing it dry….only thing I can lay my hands on here in the ‘Stan is Becks N.A. Four months into a 12 month hook and I’m not even close to risking the damnation of my eternal soul on that crap!

New-ish reader, first time commenter here. This weekend I’ve started drinking the beers I picked up in Portland last weekend and brought back to the Great White North with me.

As it was so frequently mentioned here, one of the first 6-packs into the fridge was Victory’s Prima Pils and it was so good it was also the first one gone! Now I have to either travel back to the US for a weekend or find somewhere in Canada that has it and pay through the nose! I’ve also rediscovered the joys of Sierra Nevada Torpedo IPA and tried Firestone Walker’s Union Jack for the first time, both of which were delicious!

    • September 11, 2011 at 10:41 pm #

Welcome Matthew – you’re definitely one of the gang here, as I enjoyed a Prima and a FW Double Jack (which is twice as nice!) this eve. Great minds drink alike!

I have a Double Jack stashed away as it came highly recommended. Might have to put that one in the fridge for tomorrow!
