I’m a geek in balance. I laughed most at #7 because I’ve started catching hell from my friends when I order a beer- even an MGD or something at bars that have extremely limited selections- and ask for a pint glass. The bartenders have no clue what the hell to do with the request.
Also, #9 hit me hard because I’m going to Wisconsin in about two weeks and hoping that I’m not too late for the Back Forty Bock. Most years, I plan that trip so I can get in on the Dancing Man Wheat before it disappears.
I scored an 18, which puts me on the “edge” but not right on the precipice.
Traveling for beer is certainly a sign of a beer geek on the edge, but I guess you’ve moderated in other areas (where I have not).
I answered in the affirmative to 1, 4, 7, 8, 9, 11, and 15.
Don’t tell! Now we’re inside yer head!
Maybe it should be a +6 for having no shame whatsoever to answering in the affirmative to 1,4, 7, 8, 9, 11, or 15?
John, I was in WI this past weekend (Appleton), and found some Back 40. Gotta love New Glarus, Good Luck!
I go evry summer to visit our folks and buy so much New Glarus when I arrive, everyone thinks I’m a huge lush. Then they drink them all, leaving a precious few to smuggle home. Gotta love New Glarus.
I’m in balance, but it was close. There were a few I just missed. #1 I had a beard before I discovered craft beer. #2 I’ve come close, but my beer expenditures have kept me from my next tattoo. #3 I only extract brew, mostly b/c I’m cheap. I tried for #5 for my first child, but my partner was having none of it. #6 happens periodically, but I typically don’t use pics with drinks of any kind for FB. #8 doesn’t work b/c I might actually spend more on records and when you include concert tickets, music wins. That would be an additional 11-14 points to my score, putting me in the Geek on the Edge category. It’s a fine line in beer geekdom.
I agree Zac – the wind changes and off the cliff you go. I’m on the edge myself, but pretty far away from OCBD. Not sure I’ll get there with a tattoo 9or another child named “Avery”).
Yeah, Jim you blew it when you let your kids name your dog Daisey!
I don’t like men with facial hair; I don’t have any tattoos, children or pets; my FB profile pic used to be a beer in the proper glass but I swapped out for a photo of myself; I live in an apartment, thus I have no room for a beer fridge or kegerator. If not for those I would fall closer to a score in the 30’s.
Great post, it was fun.
Thanks guys!
Thanks for playing Paulette! What was your final score? Seems pretty close to 30, which would be quite impressive!
I got a 24…
I’d consider a beer name for a child, (I have a friend who named his son Porter after his favorite beer style.) but I’m not planning on having any and pets are too much work, although to name it after beer I just might consider getting one.
If I have another kid, I’m going to name him or her Dragon’s Milk. I’m sure my wife’s on board…
I wonder if I could talk my wife into Stone or maybe DIPA.
You’d get +12 points if you can make DIPA happen!
And possibly a divorce for just suggesting it. If I can just figure out an alternative way to pronounce it…D-eee-pa…Di-pay…Dee-pay…
Or just name her Doreen Iris Pauline Anastasia and then say, wouldn’t it be cuuute if we called her Lil Dippa for short.” You’d still get +12 for that.
It’s so crazy that it just might work. Now, I just have to impregnate my wife…
A beer geek’s work is never done! 😉
Very cool quiz well done! Good to know I’m balanced in at least one way.
Ha ha. Yes, balance is a good thing, even if it’s balancing a beer obsession with the rest of the stuff in your life. We take what we can get, right?
11 – Geek in balance. Sounds good to me
Nice, but I think you’re rising! 🙂
I’m sure I’ll be on the edge by this time next year hah
I’ma lose cred with a 10. Or maybe gain it…
10?!
OK, recount. 11. Had a beard since before I drank, don’t brew, cat’s Christian name is Falcor (nicknamed Ninja), don’t have stuff stored around I don’t know about, haven’t seen Brewmasters, got drunk at a beer fest, etc. etc. I’ll drink beer from a bottle. Or whiskey. Or from a can. There are hobbies and then there are obsessions. Geeks come in the store all the time and I want to harm them. Instead, I just mock.
12. Thanks god.
Very reasonable. Hope it’s not all tattoos and kids named Pliny!
I’m glad to say I’m an 11. The whole cred thing that Daniel alluded to, etc. However if we had a whiskey geek quiz, I’m pretty sure I’m on the edge…and then some.
We all have our passions. Now if only film and photography got the amount of time I spend on beer…
Funny how that works, eh? I say the same thing about my children 🙂
Well, that’s why I started the new blog during my downtime this week. Replace beer with film and you’re almost there.
It’s a f#@king film?
Hilarious: “In the third and, hopefully, final film in the Jason Bourne trilogy (else it’s not a trilogy), Paul Greengrass returns to direct Matt Damon’s kicking of more asses. And figuring out who he is. Was. Or something.”
Jim – yeah, something like that. The beer blog is getting plenty of searches for http://itsaf#@kingbeer.com since I did the guest post. Not sure what sort of Nobel Laureates read your blog if they can’t figure out the URL there and instead do a search.
John – we need to talk if you’re into Cassavetes and/or appreciated the new film blog. I just skimmed your blog for the film geek charts Jim talked about. I got to the Steve Buscemi/Woman Under the Influence post and realized I haven’t seen that film in too long, have only seen it once and yet I think about it very, very often.

Big Cassavetes fan, though I’ve really only seen the stuff Criterion has put out. When I saw “Killing of a Chinese Bookie”, I burst out laughing in the opening minute because I’d finally figured out who the hell Jackie Treehorn was.
Hey, get a blog, fellas. 🙂
Just kidding, carry on…
Jim treats objects like women, man.
If you like fake Criterions, check out the thread on Mubi (formerly theauteurs.com)
http://mubi.com/topics/2132
I made these: http://mubi.com/lists/385 but there are lots of people with significantly more talent than me on the main thread.
I’ve seen those before. I feel like many of the ones on mubi are “legitimate” contenders to be released by Criterion.
I love that Mubi thread. I have a few things in there, but nothing the quality of some of their best stuff.
/this ends movie talk at BWB (from me, anyway)
How annoyed would you guys be if I stole this idea for my own blog?
Not at all John, Steal away!
Hey, it’s not yours! That’s like the time you gave my bike away to those Portuguese kids! “Go ahead fellas, I don’t mind if you take it!”
Okay, maybe that never happened, but if it did, it would be a great example.
Oh Boo Hoo! Shut up! You know you just stole the idea from Cosmo’s are you a Slut quiz!
Written like an angry person from a Russian Gaming Forum. Seriously, WTF does the end of that sentence even mean?
What? You no like Russian gamers you speak of? Dosbedonia…
You know, I assume they’re fans/readers of mine, but I really can’t be sure. All I know is when I saw the incoming link, I clicked on it and I saw some of my stick figures surrounded by a bunch of backwards R’s and pi symbols and stuff.
Wow – they talk in math!!
I want to repost your excellent inebriation/film genre charts here. I threw them up on my Facebook, but see potential for cross-posting.
Anyway, steal away – I imagine it’ll be the same format but about film and TV. If I can steal it from Cosmo, you can steal it from me.
Not really about the Cosmo thing, but that’s what Don and I were joking about when we were hatching it.
Heh… this is definitely an open offer on my end. With as much enjoyment as I get out of BWB, you can poach anything you want from me. Hopefully it brings you as much traffic from Portugal and Chile and Czechoslovokian gaming forums as it does for me.
Thanks, John. I think it’s be a fun way to cross promote with you. Maybe later this week I’ll figure out a way to steal it,but still send people your way.
And fingers crossed on the foreign gaming forums! That a big demo gap for us!
**This concluded “Blog Talk” for today. Tune in tomorrow when we discuss page hits vs. unique visitors!**
21 for me. At least it’s not into “OCBD” status. Does my score change if I went to 3 or more beer fests? That could be a problem.
Ooooh Alex, Jim forgot any questions about volume! It might, but you might get a Colorado exception, being as beerfests accompany every activity. “Hey Kids lets go to the Easter Egg Hunt and Beerfest in Denver next weekend!”
I know, right? By the time GABF comes around, we’re all beer-fested out. That’s probably why I haven’t attended GABF recently. I may volunteer for it this year, though, which might make it 4 festivals in 2011. I have a problem . . .
I got a dog named Porter and I still scored like a 6. What kind of points do I get for standing in the cold for the release of BCS Rare? I still spend more on whiskey than beer. The shame.
Jimbo!
Once again, nice work! Lovin the graphics.
For the record, I only scored a 6. Guess I have a ways to go.
Peace Yo!
G-LO
Yo, G-LO!
A six seems to fit where you are right now – getting started and not totally osbessed with craft beer (yet). We’ll see what your number is at the end of the year. 🙂
And, here we go, just in time for my trip up north. From the New Glarus Twitter feed: “just wanted to let you know that Cabin Fever Honey Bock and Snowshoe are now out in stores! Cheers!”
Good for you. Load up!!
Greenhorn geek, haven’t been to a beerfest in a while, didn’t realize that till just now….
You need to get back out there Scott, You’ll loose your Beer geek status. 😉
Reblogged this on GoodBeerBar.com.
This is great. I scored a 23 but I was close on a few that would put me over. I do want to get a dog and name him Pliny the Barker and I would grow a beard if my hair grew evenly!
