Well That Didn’t Take Long: The End of History is History

"Mijn procent is groter dan je procent" is Dutch for my percent is bigger than your percent

I’m so sick of talking about BrewDog’s The End of History, it’s like a nightmare I can’t get out of.  But in for a penny, in for a pound as they say.

News is spreading across the Interwebs that a Dutch brewery whose name I’m not going to try to type or pronounce (it’s even too unwieldy to cut and paste) has created a beer with an ABV of…wait for it…60%.  That’s 5% more than BrewDog’s End of History, and would unseat them as the holder of the dubious distinction of brewing the world’s biggest beer.

I haven’t seen a description of the Dutch offering, so I don’t know what kind of “beer” it is or how it was made.  And I really don’t care.  The beer is called “Start the Future.”  Get it?  Because BrewDog ended history and now these guys are restarting the…oh never mind.  I’m so tired of this malarky.  I need a nap.

Tip of the Stetson to Big Tex for sharing the link.

    One word: Argh!

    • July 29, 2010 at 12:18 pm #

Yeah, and I’m the idiot who now has to keep posting about his stuff. If I would have kept my mouth shut about The End of History, I could be writing about Dogfish Head Theobroma or some of the other tasty stuff I’ve had lately. But now it’s all BrewDog all the time.

Hopefully the Scots don’t have a response planned so we can all move on.

For someone who hates the BrewDog attention seeking system, you seem to be mentioning them a lot around here! Seems they have their testicles, er, tentacles latched onto your psyche.

That’s the danger of writing about something you don’t like, you have to follow through. Now I’m stuck in BrewDog hell.

Jim, its your blog, you don’t have to follow through if you don’t want to. People love cliffhangers!

    • July 29, 2010 at 12:51 pm #

People do love cliffhangers, Scott. It reminds me of the time the a grizzly bear was stalking me in the woods and all I had was a can of Old Chub to defend myself. The bear lunged for my throat and just then…

60%…sheesh, marketing, taste, aside…that would about kill me and my 135lb body. The Afghan’s should of just used that instead of the Sulfuric corona.

    • July 29, 2010 at 2:16 pm #

I was thinking the Corona could do it by itself – he’d be bored to death!

But 60% eclipses many fine bourbons, some of which are quite hot and potent. I’d love to try it, but I’m guessing there’s better ways to spend $45.

But, it’s a better bang for the buck, than say, Brewdog. 😉

You’re right about that Tex, tenfold.

I may be wrong here, it has been known on a couple of occasions throughout my life, but I always thought that ‘brewing’ could only get the strength (abv) to a maximum of 15-20% and anything beyond that needed a process of distillation?

So how come these silly drinks are playing a numbers game up at 60% abv and still claiming them to be ‘brewed beers’?

BrewDog’s offerings are basically cold distilled, concentrated by freezing the beer and then removing the ice, which is water, as the alcohol doesn’t freeze. This is done a number of times to remove the non-alcoholic fluid from the beer, thus boosting ABV. It’s an interesting trick, but not one that makes a great beer.

And I don’t really care about what the beverage is called, just if it’s any good. You can call Sam Adams Utopias whatever you want, I call it delicious.

Ahhhh, but thats the difference though, isn’t it? Utopias is actually brewed to it’s 22-ish%. No, using an Eisbock method to cold distill it, just a lot of time and loving your yeast to nurture it to get above the 20% mark. IMO, Utopias is still the worlds strongest beer, even then I still do not know if should be considered a beer.

Dogfish Head World Wide Stout and 120 Minute IPA are both about 18% and both are clearly still beers. Utopias might start off being a beer, but it turns into something magical during the aging process. Perhaps they use Unicorn tears?

OK I wanted to wait to announce this on my own blog, but here: I have brewed a 113% abv beer. Top that.

You can’t drink this, as it’s in concentrated powder form. But let me tell you, doing hoppy rails off a hooker’s ass is amazing.

    • July 30, 2010 at 1:58 pm #

You joke, but I think you’ve just given the fellas over at BrewDog something new to try. Soon we’ll all be freebasing imbalanced IPAs.

The truth in your joke makes it funnier.

Check out this blog, small brewery in England. He doesn’t advertise and isn’t too pretentious just a warning 75% ABV. http://brewingreality.blogspot.com/

Ha ha! That’s great! Thanks for sharing the link, now if you’ll excuse me, i need to find a straw for my colostomy bag.
