Whatcha Having this Weekend: Lost Edition

For those keeping score at home...

And by “lost” I mean Lost, the 4 hour TV extravaganza that’s going to keep me up late Sunday night and make me feel a bit muddy come Monday morning.  It’s definitely in my plans, but I’m not going to a party or anything.  I’ll just chill out with the wifey at home and enjoy a couple of goodies from the garage and yell at the TV when I’m disappointed in the ending.  And yes, there will be parties – some folks are looking at this like it’s the Super Bowl (but more entertaining with crappier commercials).

Beyond that, Saturday should be a beauty in these parts, but my wife has to work, which will probably scuttle my plans to (finally) brew my Bell’s Two Hearted clone.  It’s the same one that’s been begging to be brewed for the last few weeks but I’ve been too busy to get to it.  We’ll see if I get lucky and find the time.

Beyond that I have an overwhelming craving for Dale’s Pale Ale, which I’ll have to pick up on the way home.  It’s a good thing, too – I was going to stop at the beer store on the way to work but decided against it.  I think if I had a 12 pack of Dale’s here, I’d leave for home with 10 in the box and two in my belly.  The weekend can’t get here soon enough.

How about you?  Any plans that involve enjoying some beautiful beers or wonderful whiskey?  Anyone brewing anything special?  Share with the class below and have a great weekend!

I’ll be doing the same as you Jim, settling down for what promises to be both captivating and disheartening. I will hate to see the show end, and I know they’ll never tie everything in a neat bow, but I’ll be glued to my TV with my finger affixed permanently to the pause button, for every time my son or husband ask an annoying question 🙂

As for what I’ll be drinking, unfortunately we’ve got no Dharma Beer which would be cool. Maybe I’ll buy some cans, print out Dharma labels and glue them on so I can feel like one of them, LOL. Otherwise maybe something from Goose Island Beer, since at least it comes from an “island”.

I know what you mean about the pause button – I hate interruptions during special TV occasions. There’s a fire in the kitchen? Deal with it!! The smoke monster just tried to lift up Hurley but he was too big!!

Maybe some Dale’s with Dharma labels. That’s be fun.

The only people who are lost are the ones that watch this wreck of a show! I watched the last 45 minutes of the first episode and vowed to never watch again. So glad I did.

On my agenda this weekend is some more Oskar Blues stuff. I have an Old Chub I’ve been hanging onto for far too long, and I have a Gordon that is calling my name. I might also pick up some Dales finally to see what my brother has been raving about since November.

On the harder side, I have a Wild Turkey Rye I haven’t cracked the seal on yet so that is what I’ll be drinking. It is Graduation night at my house so we will have Cake, Ice cream, and Beer. Congrats to Brian my Graduating senior and Salutatorian of his class! Nicely done!

Wow! Many congrats. But as much as I love you, you’re a total schmuck for not liking Lost 🙂

OK, someone has to say it…You two are pathetic! I think I’ll go on Hurley’s diet. Get stranded on a desert Island and loose …nothing. Cmon, that alone is enough reason to never watch the show.

We’re talking about an island that can bend space and time and reach beyond its boundaries and pull people to it with the force of fate. Any you’re out because the fat guy doesn’t get skinny?

You know how much fat is in coconut?!

Not that much! Oooh let me go watch Avatar the last Airbender with my kid! Thats another great show, then when we are done we can watch some stupid star wars clone wars crap then we can make radios out of empty coconuts like they did on Gilligan’s Island. Cmon! The show is as stupid as shows get!

I wanna know what DON loves to watch given his refusal to suspend disbelief. Oh wait, nothing like that exists on TV, so we must assume Don reads Nietzsche and communes with the natural world, right?

I recall Don was a big fan of BJ and the Bear, which featured a ruggedly handsome trucker traveling the land with his pet chimpanzee helping damsels in distress. I really don’t think he has a leg to stand on here.

Jim, I’ve actually never seen that show. I liked Smokey and the Bandit! Duh! Very realistic.

I can suspend disbelief, but only when I watch Porn!

So answer Katie’s question . What DO you watch, Mr. Lack of Imagination?

          May 21, 2010 at 12:14 pm #

Criminal Minds, House Hunters, Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations, Man V. Food, Andrew Zimmern’s Bizarre Foods, and Spongebob Squarepants.

        May 21, 2010 at 12:13 pm #

What, Don? You don’t think gorgeous 20-year-olds with double-Ds are dying to do a hairy, old, out-of-shape dude? That’s why whiskey was invented, friend. And percoset. Oh, and LSD. And for the record, i had a major crush on Greg Evigan (BJ) when I was a kid. But then again, also had a crush on Mac Davis and Tony Orlando so there’s apparently no accounting for taste…or consistency.

Criminal Minds: everything gets solved in a neat little hour, by a team led by a handsome Italian who also happens to be the voice of Fat Tony on the Simpsons…plausible? Not.

        House Hunters: Are you kidding?

        No Reservations: Great show.

Man V Food: really? really really? Watching someone sweat like a pig and eat like one too? That’s a typical family reunion for me, I don’t need TV for it. I’d rather stick hot pokers in my eyes.

        Bizarre Foods: Ugh. Bleck.

        Spongebob: Agreed.

  3. May 21, 2010 at 12:36 pm #

Ok, here I come out of the closet: I LOVE LOST.

I love the philosophical themes (1/2 the characters are named after enlightenment thinkers) that run throughout. Classic Dualism.

Katie seems to speak her mind. heh.

Other than LOST, you’ll find me parked on the science or history channel. I used to be a huge xfiles junky. Fringe is OK.

    • Katie Pizzuto
      May 21, 2010 at 12:40 pm #

I dig Fringe too, and agree on the philosophical themes of Lost, but I love that it also blends religious themes, esoteric themes, sci fi, etc. It keeps you on your toes and makes you think, which can’t much be said for TV nowadays. I love the History channel too, and NatGeo. God knows the FoodNetwork has gone to hell in a bucket! (and yeah, I speak my mind….having a blog is what keeps me out of jail, LOL.)

BTW, back to the topic of this post, I’m thirsty for some Goose Island now. Jim, they got any of their stuff here in town?

      • May 21, 2010 at 12:43 pm #

Gotcha on the religion…I got a MA in theology. Have they ever mentioned Jacob’s smokemonster brother’s name? Esau? ha.

        I forgot to answer Jim’s question…

Yup, brewing tomorrow…chocolate Saison. not really a style, but we’ll see how it turns out. Gonna crush my grains tonight.

As far as what I’m drinking…I have no clue.

Jim has a Matilda in his garage, if he ever takes it out of the box I sent him.

      • Katie Pizzuto
        May 21, 2010 at 12:49 pm #

Oh, yumm, Nate, a chocolate Saison sounds awesome! Something to be said for working from home…given that it’s friday, i’m currently having a ham & cheese sandwich with a few pringles and a Smuttynose IPA 🙂

      • May 21, 2010 at 12:57 pm #

@Don: I guess I’ll have to look in the box and pull out that Matilda Don. I always think it needs to be a special occasion to drink the stuff you send, or that I should review it. And being that I’m lame and lazy, your beers tend to stay in the box!

@ Nate: I actually can’t imagine what a chocolate saison might taste like, so it’s good you’re making one. You can tell me.

@ Katie: I hate you. I’m in a windowless office in the basement of a building pretending to be productive. And I have no beer, nor Pringles!

    • Don
      May 21, 2010 at 12:44 pm #

Ohhh Nate! Not you too! Now I feel strangely like I’m on some sort of island.

      • May 21, 2010 at 12:52 pm #

I thought it would be retarded until my wife forced me to sit down through an episode five years ago and I was hooked.

Matilda is a great beer. Love it. The best of their Belgian series if you ask me. We popped a 2008 at DLD and it had soured, but was really good still.

If my 6 month old son, Ivan, would have been a female, Matilda was the chosen name.

      • May 21, 2010 at 12:58 pm #

You’d be on the island, Don, but you’ve missed the boat!!

      May 21, 2010 at 4:40 pm #

I agree that I believe that the Man in Black’s name is Esau for that religious tie in.

  4. May 21, 2010 at 2:31 pm #

Think it’s time to bust out one of my rarer sours this weekend. Which one is still up in the air!

    • May 21, 2010 at 2:54 pm #

Are you watching Lost and enjoying a rare beer for the occasion, or is the beer the occasion itself?

      • May 22, 2010 at 1:22 pm #

I couldn’t stand the show, so no just the sour by itself this weekend =)

    • May 21, 2010 at 3:44 pm #

Yumm. Just had a Girardin black label last weekend and it was fabulous. Great, now I’m all confused! Jim, you never answered me with all the TV drama, they sell Goose Island stuff here in town at Crown?

      • May 21, 2010 at 3:52 pm #

I don’t think so, Katie. I don’t ever recall seeing any Goose Island stuff in these parts, but I might have overlooked it. The Matilda I have was send from Idaho by Don. Other than that, I’ve only had their stuff in Chicago.

Oh I am way Lost. You are in the minority here Don.

  6. May 21, 2010 at 4:41 pm #

You guys are cracking me up. Not sure why though. While I’d like to comment on LOST, I can’t. Haven’t seen a single episode. Not even once. Not even 60 seconds.

As far as beer goes, I’ve got three different Goose Island bottles in the beer fridge. I may stick with the theme and pop one open this weekend.

You are my hero Chad! I wish I could unsee the 45 minutes of Lost I saw, but I cannot. You’ve beaten me on being totally unlost cool. Have a great weekend. What do you think Matilda or Sophie?

I am a LOST junkie, my husband gave up a few seasons ago (he needs closure at the end of an hour because I swear he has ADD). He thinks he is going to be able to watch the finale with out knowing what happened the previous 3 or 4 seasons and be able to figure it all out. Well I tell you, I’m not filling him in, all I know is he better keep his trap shut and hand over the TiVo remote so no one gets hurt.
I may bust out my Russian River Consecration for this momentus occasion, but then again maybe that Chimay Special Reserve (blue label) that’s been in the back of the closet that I have been test aging. It’s difficult to know what to do. What if none of my questions are answered?
Oh and @Katie had a great idea with the Dharma beer (although I imagine it would taste like Olympia beer).
    Happy viewing everyone!

    • May 21, 2010 at 5:55 pm #

Ha ha – hand over the TiVo remote and no one will get hurt!

I’d go with the Russian River, but that’s just because I can’t get it here in NJ. Rarity makes it more special to me, I guess. Enjoy the show!

Either way you spell it, it’s a good choice, Katie. I picked a clunker, Otter Creek’s Quercus Vitis Humulus. Yuck: http://wp.me/pBL4g-un
