Those of you who read these pages regularly know what I’m having. Superstition has taken hold, and I must repeat my beverage consumption of the past few weeks that has propelled my Jets to an unlikely berth in the AFC Championship Game: Southern Tier Oat and a Dale’s Pale Ale or two.
I’ll also be checking out a few selections from Flying Dog (Gonzo and Raging Bitch included) to see if their “good stuff” will change my underwhelmed opinion of the brewery. I also picked up a bottle of Knob Creek, just in case I have to go blotto for a while after the big game.
What about you? Do your plans revolve around the greatest sport on earth (not THAT football, OUR football), or could you not care less? Is your team still in the mix, or are you rooting against old rivals? Are you treating Sunday like the Super Bowl (like I am) just in case your team gets crushed by the best quarterback ever to play the game? And no Don, he doesn’t wear purple!
Let us know your plans in the Comments and I hope you all have a wonderful time this weekend, even the Colts fans (at least up until 5:30pm Sunday or so…).
-Jim

The stats and record books say he does wear purple!! JIM!!! As for my drinking pleasure, I have a bunch of IPAs I’m trying to get through before they turn. Included here is a 60, two 90s, and a 120 minute from Dogfish Head, an Alpha Dog from Laughing Dog, a Hop Henge from Deschutes, and some IPA thingy from Full Sail. If I drink all those I will end up on Oprah as part of a blogger detox show, so I will probably not get through them all, but at least you know the lineup. I am also headed over to the liquor store today to pick up some additional bourbons. I have one that I will review soon, but need a couple more to get back into the whiskey side of things.
Careful with that 120, partner. She’s a doozy. And I don’t think IPA’s turn, only the wet-hopped ones. But don’t let that stop you from slugging ’em down!
I’ve heard different things about IPAs. I know they don’t age well, so I definitely want to get them consumed in the next couple of months. I’ve heard the same thing about the 120. My beer guy said I should allow about 45 minutes to drink it. I said its only a 12 ozer, and he said still allow the 45 minutes to drink it. My understanding is that it is a 21% ABV brew! Awesome! You can’t even sell that in the State of Idaho without a liquor license. And the State liquor stores don’t sell beer! Soooo guess I need to depend on the good ole US post office until Idaho pulls its head out!
The Ten Fidy was good. Unfortunately when i had drank mine the Lenny’s RIPS kind of did in my taste buds prior to drinking it. I’ll have to try one again.
Any beer by Dogfish Head that has a yellow cap with a “!” on it should be enjoyed at a leasurely pace and with Advil nearby. Those are the crazy ones!
Even though I am a diehard Giants fan and have never rooted for the Jets (it has something to do with them sharing our stadium), I’m a sucker for an underdog. Also, Angela (my wife) LOVES Peyton so, of course, I have to go against her to make things fun. With that, I hope to hit the store and pick up some of that mojo you keep talking about – Southern Tier Oat. If I can’t sneak a trip in, I have plenty to choose from in my stash…I still have 2 Mad Elfs!
I too have a couple of 22oz Elves hiding in the garage. I’m thinking Christmas in July…
Enjoy the Oat and Go Jets!!
I forgot, i also picked up some Oskar Blues Ten-Fiddy, which I’m eager to try. Another great canned beer to enjoy this summer at the lake I hope!
Not sure how you feel about pilsners, especially those in cans…you should try Oskar Blues Mama’s Little Yellow Pils. It is a GREAT summer beer. I was a bit hesitant but really enjoyed it.
I have yet try Ten Fidy – is it worth the $15 for a 4-pack?
I can’t wait to find out about the Ten Fidy, Rob. I’ll certainly let you know. I like a good (operative word is good) pilsner, especially Victory Prima Pils. Sounds like LYP is worth a try, especially with that terrific name!
I’ll be watching the game beer free. I have to work but will be able to catch the game before I go in. Obviously, you know my leanings on the game. P.S. I love the yellow capped ones, too.
Football is great to watch beer-free, especially the playoffs where there are so many talented guys doing their thing. There’s no real need to help pass the time with beer, except that beer’s awesome.
Just picked up a bottle of 13 year old Van Winkles Family Reserve Rye! This is gonna be a goooooooooddddddd!!! Weekend!
Why do I think it’s not going to see 14, Don?
Good thought Jim. You know me well!
Poor little bastard never saw it comin’!
Funny stuff. Being a Jersey guy, I wouldn’t mind seeing the Jets make it to the big game. I’m just hoping all the games are GOOD. I hate blowouts at this stage of the season.
Beerwise, I don’t know what I’m having anymore! Last night I had a Troegenator from Troegs, (duh), and a Clipper City’s Winter brew which was an ‘Imperial ESB’. Neither of those were planned, it just happened, and I think I’m going to wing it for Sunday too!
I had a Ten Fidy last night and a NJ beer-a River Horse Oatmeal Milk Stout, which was pretty interesting. It actually had a milky aftertaste, which I could decide if I liked or not (kinda cool, kinda weird). But overall it was s good one, especially as it warmed.
And I agree about blowouts, except when it’s the Jets. Then I love to see them pound the snot out of the other team. It takes the stress out of the game for me.
I had a surprise last night. Remember that my sister in law had picked up for me the 10 pack of Imported brews, and most of them were light foreign lagers? well I had one last night. One of only two dark beers in the pack. I had the St. Pauly Girl Special Dark, and much to my surprise it didn’t suck. It was actually kinda good. It had a dark brown opaque pour with a big 2 finger head that dissipated slowly to a thin whisp. It had pretty good flavor dark malts, toasted nuts, and molasses. It had a lagery nose, and the mouthfeel was pretty thin, but overall its flavor was pretty good. I love pleasant surprises!
