Boulevard Brewing Dark Truth Stout: A Sleeping Sensation…Sort Of

Well my sleep saga continues, but I think I may have come across a solution.  Last night after dinner I had a little pool maintenance to take care of, then we needed to find a hotel for an upcoming trip to Vegas.  That took until around 9pm and I was afraid that I wasn’t going to be able to have a drink without it totally screwing up my sleep, and what is more I felt that second wind coming on, so I did it anyway.  I poped the cap off a 12 oz bottle of Boulevard Brewing’s Dark Truth Stout, and took a cigar out to my front porch for some “me” time.

I think it worked pretty well, but tonight will be the real test.

Tuesday I picked up a bottle of Boulevard Brewing’s Dark Truth Stout.  This is a big and absolutely wonderful beer.  First off, look at that head!  It poured about a 3-4 inch head, and it foamed up no matter how I poured it.  That head made me sleepy just to look at it!  what a great pillow it would make!

The beer poured inky black and looked a little like well used motor oil.  The nose on this brew was amazing.  Dark fruit, licorice and a slight herbal quality told me I was in for a treat.  The mouthfeel was like drinking heavy cream and it coated the palate well.  The beer drank sweet at first then there was a dark fruit thing going on like plums and dark cherries, no doubt from the belgian yeast used, then when the alcohol kicked in it gave it a licorice finish.

This was a 9.7% ABV beer, so I was hopeful that it would do the trick for my insomnia.  I finished the beer around 10pm and then went in and talked with my wife for about an hour.  So the only thing left was to try out my experiment to see if I could indeed go to sleep.  Went to bed, and the usual flood of thoughts endered my head, and I thought “oh no, here we go again.”  But just as the thoughts were about to take over, a settled calm came over me like a dark cloud and I was able to drift off without issues.  It was great I slept all the way until my alarm woke me up at 5:30.  I didn’t feel like a zombie and was ready to take on my day.

I say tonight will be the real test, because I’m not sure whether it was the calming influence of the alcohol that helped me overcome my insomnia, or if it was just the magnitude of the sheer exhaustion I felt.  So tonight, when I’m at least better rested from last night will be a good test to see if the beer and/or whiskey drank in the evening is having a beneficial impact on my sleep or not.  As usual I’ll keep you all posted.

Oh, and if you see this beer, for God’s sake buy it!  It was really good, and I think if you are a stout lover, you will truly love this beer.

Maybe you should review a whiskey tonight just to be safe! Love Dark Truth Stout and I love that they put it in 12 oz. bottles. The 750s are great for sharing, but intimidating when housing a big beer like this. And probably too much to induce quality sleep. Glad you got some rest Don.

I think tonight I’m going to crack open the new Devil’s Cut from Beam. I totally dug the 12 oz bottle too. I agree completely that a 750 or even a 22 can present a pretty big challenge for such a big beer unless you have someone to share it with. It makes it more affordable too. Just under $6 instead of $12 or $13.

God Don, I’ve got to try that stuff, it sound like pure heaven!

BTW: Had a pint of Guinness at lunch today with some old buddies. Then I picked up a 6 pack of 60′ IPA, another of Yards Growler and a 12 of Dales, so I’m all set for the birthday bash/crab feast tomorrow (and there’s only 2 of us who drink beer.)

Dark Truth has become my go-to beer with a cigar.

I’d love to live in a place where it could be my go to as well, but it doesn’t stick around too long in these parts. It was an inspired combination however.

I like just about everything Boulevard brews.

I’ve only had good stuff from them, but unfortunately not enough. Don’t see a lot of them in NJ!
