I’m Sick of Snow, I’m Drinkin’ IPAs.

What is going on? Didn’t any one tell Mother Nature that it is Spring?  The calendar says April?  For God’s sake its almost May!  Isn’t the Saying April showers bring May flowers?  Not April Snow you don’t gotta mow.  Ok, that is enough of a rant.  This was the view from my front porch this morning.  For Pete’s sake the sandbags have been out of the truck for over a month!  Last weekend we mowed the lawn, tilled the garden, mowed down weeds in the pasture burned slash, and generally did outdoor activities.  I think this weekend we will go sledding!  My kid has a sunburn from his track meet two days ago for Cripe’s sake!

Ok, so this is definitely stout weather, but I’m drinkin’ IPAs this weekend.  Last weekend when it was in the upper 50s I purchased a 12 pack of Samuel Adams Latitude 48 Deconstructed.  So I thought I would dive into that this weekend…I don’t care how cold the weather gets.  I know in a couple of months when it is hot enough to scramble eggs on the hood of my car I’ll be wishing this weather was back, if only for a brief arctic blast, but until then I am ringing in the warmer temps with my taste buds.  IPAs and Burgers on the grill.

So how about you?  You gonna crack open some lighter brews, or are you staying with stouts and porters until you are sure the warm weather is here to stay?  As usual let us know in the comments, and let us know your plans.  Hopefully something warm.

Oh, and I would like to say to all our readers in Nebraska (you know who you are, Angela) don’t get too comfortable with those 70 degree temps…This is coming your way.

Snowing up here too, Don. Have’t had it stick since last Wednesday but it was snowing to beat the band an hour ago. The grass is confused, and we’ll have no cherries this year. As for the beer, IPA is the theme du jour. Though I’m a bit put off by the current release of Racer5. I wonder if they are having Simcoe issues. It’s just not as citrusy and crisp as it’s been. Also out of Rocket Dog in the club but it’s available and spot on. Laughing Dog is well stocked with good hops. I picked up some HUB ipa Wednesday and it’s going down rather well. In fact I think I need to go get some more…If I can navigate through the blizzard.

Glad to hear others are willing in warm weather through their actions. Keep the IPAs flowin!

But weren’t we supposed to drink Ivan the Terrible today?

Are we? It is noon O’clock.

I’m genuinely excited that the colder weather is coming this way. May through September in St. Louis is like living inside of a dog’s mouth so I’m cherishing this very late spring.

I’m still chipping away at my most recent batch of smuggled Wisconsin beers. So this weekend, it’ll be the Capital Brewery’s Blonde Doppelbock, a handful of Spotted Cows, and possibly the New Glarus ABT. In fact, I can’t believe I’ve had the ABT for as long as I have without drinking it.

Sounds like a good lineup. Of course it always sounds like a good lineup when you are drinking craft beers from Wisconsin. So, do you drink while you are watching your movies, or do you need to stay completely focused?

      • April 29, 2011 at 1:40 pm #

Funny you ask- I was just thinking the other day of doing a list of “Movies to Drink Beer To”. Generally, I stay sober. I might have one or two and THEN watch a movie, but I almost never drink and watch.

Sorry for your loss….the loss of your Spring, that is.

Good thing you have the appropriate box of tools with which to fix the broken weather. Unfortunately (and somewhat oddly) we Least Coast dwellers won’t be able to get our work gloves on that tool box for another few weeks or so. At least we know it’s on it’s way (thanks to one of the BoozeDancers, G-LO, who unearthed the news earlier today).

After last night’s craft beer barn find – 2007 Great Divide Oak Aged Yeti – I’m not in the mood for much of anything else because few brews will match it; however, that won’t stop me from opening a Firestone-Walker Double Jack as soon as I get home.

    Cheers!

I have a Double Jack waiting for me as well, and I think I’ll pop over to the beer store tonight on the way home. I’m in a pilsner mood…

I thought you were on the great drinkdown of 2011?

          Mission Accomplished! 😉

Yes, it is very strange that we got them out here, and the East Coast doesn’t have any yet. Well now I have to drink them and tell you all how great and interesting they were so you will feel as left out as I do when you all talk about Dogfish Head and Troegs.

We were up in the 80’s here in Washington DC for the longest time. Now today we are back in the 60’s so I’m actually happy.

I have a bottle of Avery – Celebration not Litigation I think I’m breaking into this weekend. It really isn’t based on the temps though. Although I do want to try and get a few of my heavier beers out of the fridge before we hit real summer weather.

Today is only the 2nd day of 70s here – its CRAZY! Its WAY colder WAY later this year (and WET)
There had better not be any snow on the way… I got a beerfestival to go to tomorrow!!!

    • Don
      April 29, 2011 at 3:49 pm #

It’s been a trend to have colder weather later lately. I remember last year on June 1st it was snowing. But I’ve never had it actually stick to the ground this late in the year here. And it seems you get our weather about a day or two later than us, so I’d say go to your beer festival prepared for any sort of weather.

actually I’ve been waiting for a nice night on the deck to drink my Bell’s Oarsman.. but its been too cold!

      April 29, 2011 at 3:50 pm #

Just had a Bells Oberon at lunch today. Nice stuff! Enjoy the Oarsman.

  8. April 29, 2011 at 3:27 pm #

Here on the Left coast the weather couldn’t be better. Spring sprang. Break out the pales and IPAs. Heck, even a hef sounds good.

I was thinking the same thing two days ago. We’ll see if your good weather holds.

    Ha-ha. Idaho.

  10. April 29, 2011 at 4:09 pm #

We’ll be getting some of your moisture here in Colorado tonight into tomorrow. It’ll probably just rain here in Denver, but it maysnow farther south which is a bummer because the guys at Bristol invited us down to the Springs for some brews.

    • April 29, 2011 at 4:30 pm #

Bristol makes some good stuff! Have you been to Trinity Brewing in the Springs? I was there a couple of weeks ago. Very solid lineup and great food.

      • April 29, 2011 at 4:32 pm #

Never been to Trinity, but have had their beers, good stuff :). I keep running into them at all the local beer festivals.

      April 29, 2011 at 4:46 pm #

I’d go anyway. Nothing better than hot springs in the snow!

      • April 29, 2011 at 4:52 pm #

Oh I’m going no matter what, it’s just a bitch on the Palmer Divide when it’s snowing; the drivers, not the conditions. 🙂

          April 29, 2011 at 5:07 pm #

Drive careful. Maybe rent an armored Assault Vehicle.

  11. April 29, 2011 at 4:28 pm #

I like the snow! It means ski season isn’t over yet. Arapahoe Basin may stay open until July this year with all the moisture we’ve been getting.

I don’t really subscribe to the seasonal appropriateness of certain beers. If I want an imperial stout in August, I’ll have one. Pilsener in January? Sure! Great Divide releases their Chocolate Yeti in May as a “summer” beer. I think Stone ships their IRS in June as well.

    • April 29, 2011 at 4:37 pm #

I’m with you on not drinking according to the season, for the most part, pilsners do sound a lot better to me in the summer. My wife won’t drink a stout when the temps get up above 70.
A-Basin in summer, did quite a bit of slush skiing back in the early eighties there, great fun!

    • Don
      April 29, 2011 at 4:50 pm #

Good. I tend to dive into summer brews about now until about July then I want something dark. That is usually when I break out scotch ales and Black IPAs.

  12. April 29, 2011 at 4:38 pm #

Man, it’s like 76 and sunny out and all I really want is an IPA. I guess I’ll have one…and maybe a wheat beer as well. God, I love the spring.

What the hell? Is this torment a Conservative day? Or is that just every day for you Zac? 😉

      • April 29, 2011 at 5:13 pm #

Why do you say that? Are you a conservative?

        • Don
          April 29, 2011 at 5:17 pm #

My whole life Zac. Its in “About the Brothers”.

      • April 29, 2011 at 5:22 pm #

Oh, are we supposed to read that?

        • Don
          April 29, 2011 at 5:25 pm #

Only if you want. I’m surprised you haven’t figured me out by now. That is probably why you were so confused by me. Its all beginning to make sense now, right?

      • April 29, 2011 at 5:34 pm #

I figured you more for a moderate than straight-up conservative, but that’s cool. You like beer, whiskey, and cigars. You can’t be all bad. 😉

          April 29, 2011 at 5:44 pm #

I am definitely more moderate than the wackjobs on the radio, but I definitely lean towards the right…plays hell with my back.

It’s been 83 and sunny all week, not a cloud in the sky. I’ve been Dude-like and just slugging white russians.

I switched to summer tyres a couple of weeks ago, I hope you didn’t.

Froze my ass off in the garage last night smoking a cigar and drinking Ranger IPA.

  15. April 30, 2011 at 6:03 pm #

The New Glarus ABT was one of the best beers I’ve ever had. It had none of the aftertaste that you usually find in a lot of higher ABV brews. It was as smooth as a baby’s ass. Their description of it- “Belgian Dark Candi Sugar encourages the decadence of rum, raisin dark chocolate and sherry like fruit tones”- is spot-on.

      May 2, 2011 at 9:51 am #

Sounds delicious. And I know you drink a lot of New Glarus stuff, so if you say it is one of the best beers you have ever had, that is really saying a lot.

When I first read this post a few days ago the temp here in Austin was about 93 and I’d been enjoying IPA’s and summer seasonals for weeks. Today, its 46 degrees, and you were right about it being on the way. However, tomorrow we’ll probly be back close to the 90’s, but in honor of this post, and this 40 degree weather in TX, a Widmer Bro’s black IPA should suffice. Best of both worlds. RIH Osama! USA!

      May 2, 2011 at 3:39 pm #

Well the temps have moderated somewhat here too. In the 60s today, and yesterday. Actually drank a Ranger IPA and a Back in Black on the front deck while I smoked a Cain Maduro yesterday. I love outdoor Cigar weather.
