Big Beer Shuts Down the Beer and Whiskey Brothers!

WE’VE BEEN SERVED!  It happened to us!  I guess all the saber rattling over the last few days has spooked big beer, and we got a Cease and Desist  letter from the attorneys at Dewey, Chetham, & Howe, Big Beer’s go to attorneys for squashing little guys like us.  I can’t share all the particulars under penalty of death or worse taxes, but here is a quote from the memo that pretty much sums things up:

The law firm of Dewey, Chetham, and Howe have been retained by “Big Beer” (not really what it said) in the matter of The Beer and Whiskey Brother’s Blog.  We are hereby ordering the Beer and Whiskey Brothers (aka Don and Jim) to cease and desist all blogging activity as it relates to beer or any other malted or distilled beverage.  We are of the opinion that this blog is slanderous to our clients and puts them in a bad light when they are simply acting in a capacity to improve their overall market share (shooting for 100% here) in a very competitive product space.  Furthermore we request a hand written, signed and notarized letter of apology to “Big Beer” for hurting their feelings and making them feel bad about their corporate practices.

There you have it, we’re gone!  Another casualty of “Big Beer.”  But don’t worry, Jim and I have always had an idea for a sports blog that we are just dying to dive into.  You can find us at http://www.CricketAndBocceBros.com.  Happy April everyone! 😉

    Happy April Fools!

You guys got a mention on Beernews.org for breaking the Brewmasters/Bourdain story – I’m sure you already knew that.

      April 1, 2011 at 10:18 am #

Yes, we knew. I think Adam was a little torqued that we scooped him. But all is fair in Love, War, and Beer!

  3. April 1, 2011 at 10:18 am #

You guys are funny!!! (wait, this IS an April Fool’s joke, right??)

Dewey, Chetham, and Howe? Come on…you guys could have come up with something more creative lol…Somebody has been watching too many Three Stooges hahah

      April 1, 2011 at 10:23 am #

You know Steven, the classics never go out of style!

    • April 1, 2011 at 10:31 am #

What’s with brothers and the Dewey, Chetham, and Howe gag? The Car Talk (http://www.cartalk.com/) guys have also retained their legal services.

And for the record… Bocce is a great Beer and Whisky friendly game! Unless of course things turn violent and it becomes a game of Dodgeball.

Look forward to the new website. Will there be a launch party?

      • Don
        April 1, 2011 at 10:38 am #

Careful about that Launch party stuff. Around these parts of Idaho when you say that they are typically blowing anvils 200 feet into the sky! I want to play Bocce at your family reunion!

      • April 1, 2011 at 10:51 am #

Dewey, Cheetham & Howe is the actual D/B/A of the Car Talk brothers. Pretty neat seeing their sign in Cambridge, MA (our fair city)…

        • Don
          April 1, 2011 at 10:56 am #

Not sure what a D/B/A is Adam, but I always thought that was just a joke, not a real firm.

      • April 1, 2011 at 11:03 am #

D/B/A is short hand for ‘Doing Business As’… Your blog can be Beer & Whiskey Brothers but the actual registered company name that the blog belongs to can be something completely different, like Don and Jim’s Kick Ass Corp… you would D/B/A as Beer & Whiskey brothers.

The Car Talk guys file their taxes on the show as Dewey Cheetham & Howe (just like you would file yours as Don and Jim’s Kick Ass Corp if that was the registered company name). PHEW. Sorry for the extra nerdiness!

I appreciate the explanation Adam. Thanks.

Do you have a Bocce set…Cuz, that makes all the difference!

      • April 1, 2011 at 12:25 pm #

I do indeed. Though I do not have a regulation sized court to play on. It won’t matter after a few drinks. 🙂

        • Don
          April 1, 2011 at 12:28 pm #

Not a bit. In Idaho after a few drinks we would break out the shotguns, and then have the kids throw the balls into the air while we shot at them! That is Idaho Bocce.

        You’re scaring me Don!

        • Don
          April 1, 2011 at 2:40 pm #

I know, it used to scare me too. But now that I have acclimated, it is just fun horseplay.

      • April 1, 2011 at 10:22 pm #

        You’re a mad man Don! 🙂

      Good one!

  7. April 1, 2011 at 10:26 am #

Stewart’s Root Beer has trademarked ‘Beer’, and is bringing AB, Coors and Miller to court for infringement. A settlement could be reached that leaves these three companies with only one option: further dilute their products and market them as ‘water’.

I’m interested in the Desani Lawsuit to follow. 😉

      • April 1, 2011 at 10:36 am #

        True…
All those people should just get together over a good beer and talk it out as decent gentlemen. May I suggest a Unibroue La Fin Du Monde or a Brooklyn Local Nr. 1 ?
        🙂

      Great! Our first new subscriber!

  9. April 1, 2011 at 10:32 am #

Not funny considering that 1. It’s my birthday and you freaked me out, and 2. I have gotten similar letters from lawyers representing certain shipping companies if you all remember, which is why this wouldn’t have surprised me on some level! LOL

    • Don
      April 1, 2011 at 10:39 am #

Well Katie, to be a good AFD joke, there has to be a level of believability!

  10. April 1, 2011 at 10:33 am #

Nice. You played off this meme you’ve been building all week and right after Don’s rant. Well played, sirs.

    • Don
      April 1, 2011 at 11:29 am #

Thanks Zac. I still meant the rant tho. 😉

      • April 1, 2011 at 11:31 am #

I know. It’s just that the theme/meme of the week was “Big Beer sucks” and you all closed out with this little gem. You might not have planned it that way, but it worked.

          April 1, 2011 at 11:38 am #

Thanks. It was a planned accident.

It’s about time somebody stood up to your bullying! Picking on those defenseless beverage conglomerates . . . disgusting.

    • Don
      April 1, 2011 at 11:07 am #

Yes, we really brought this one on ourselves. We’re like the bully that gets their ass kicked!

Wow. I’m bothered by (but have to say congrats to you two for a great blog) how angry I was when I first read the front page section.. With a 3 week old at home, dates and times all run together so today’s date was the last thing on my mind. I’ve been had! Single Barrel Knob as my punishment tonight..

    • Don
      April 1, 2011 at 11:21 am #

Nothing makes everything as blurry as a 3 week old! I’m glad you were at least bothered by it, others were probably disappointed it wasn’t real!

  14. April 1, 2011 at 12:17 pm #

This was a cruel and unusual (but funny) AFD joke. Meanies! I was scared there for about 2 seconds.

    • Don
      April 1, 2011 at 12:18 pm #

      Gotcha! 😉

  15. April 1, 2011 at 2:54 pm #

Not bad. I’d like to say I was fooled but alas not. Still a nice touch. Keep up the good work Gentlemen.

      April 1, 2011 at 2:57 pm #

Cmon John, not even for a little bit?

      • April 1, 2011 at 4:04 pm #

Dewey and Cheatam are my lawyers. He had to fire Howe for incompetence.

        • Don
          April 1, 2011 at 4:18 pm #

I heard they replaced Howe with Moore.

  16. April 1, 2011 at 9:15 pm #

    As usual, nice job. 🙂

Sports blog? Can you guys explain the game of cricket to me please? That should be your first blog okay.

    • April 2, 2011 at 11:04 am #

Cricket is easy, it’s all to do with innings, basically when you’re in you’re out and when you’re out you’re in.
There are six balls to an over and the Cricket world cup which is running now is a limited over competition with each team having 50 overs in their innings.

A test match lasts 5 days and invariably ends in a draw 🙂

As an aside, possibly the greatest cricket quote from a BBC commentator (Brain Johnston) was when Peter Willey and Michael Holding were facing each other. The commentator announced; “The Batsman’s Holding, The Bowler’s Willey”

      • April 4, 2011 at 9:54 am #

        Yay, cricket humor!
