NFL Wildcard Weekend: Whatcha Drinkin?

Well it is January and it is one of the happiest and saddest months for pro football.  If you are  football nuts like Jim and I you are happy because the playoffs are here, and if your team is in them so much the better, and if they didn’t make it, so what it is a great excuse to watch lots of football and drink lots of beer and whiskey.  It is sad too, because the season is coming to a close.  It’s kind of how you feel a couple days before ending a great vacation.  Jim and I are lucky again this year as both our favorite teams are in the mix.  Jim is one of those off beat, foot video lovin’ Jets fans, and I love me some Aaron Rogers and the Packers!

I have a great lineup of brews to pop open this weekend too, as well as some great whiskeys.  I have a Ninkasi Oatis in the fridge right now just waiting for some love.  I was thinking this would be the perfect accompaniment for the Packer’s game Sunday afternoon.  If you recall when I reviewed this beer I didn’t love it.  That was back when Ninkasi was going through growing pains.  Since then I have had some great Ninkasi brews and I thought I would give it another try.

As for Whiskey, my most favorite brother on the whole planet (also my only brother) sent me a box with 4 Glencarin glasses in it for Christmas this year.  It has been fun re-discovering some of my whiskeys and trying them with the perfect glass wear.  I’ll post about this later, but I have some Bulleit and perhaps a Rebel yell or two that I will try with the new glass wear.

What about you?  Have any plans for the weekend?  Did your teams make it into the final month of NFL play?  What will you be drinking this weekend?  Let us know in the comments, and have a great one!

First off they call it “foot” ball for a reason, just ask Rex Ryan! 🙂

I’m going 100% superstitious here, and will be drinking a Southern Tier Oat during the game. This is the beer I drank during each game last year as the Jets made their improbable march through the playoffs. I’m hoping it’ll work again this year.

I also have a bottle of my favorite whiskey, Four Roses Small Batch, which I’ll take a nip or two from over the weekend.

    Go Jets!

Yes, you have had the Oat at every game during the playoffs last year, but perhaps it has run its course. I was thinking that the Jets will need you to pull out the big guns and go for a Barrel aged Schafly.

      • January 7, 2011 at 11:54 am #

That could get expensive. At least I hope it does. 🙂

    Go COLTS!!!

Hoosiers know how to drink craft beer during football games and this year with the Colts grinding through every game, we’ve been drinking more than usual. DAMN YOU SCOBEE!

Each week I host a viewing party and here’s what we have lined up for tomorrow:

Sun King Brewing Co (http://sunkingbrewing.com/) and their Osiris Pale Ale. They also have Coconut Joe on at the brewery right now so I’m hoping a growler makes it over.

Flat 12 Bierwerks (http://flat12.me/) just opened last week. We’ll have growlers of the Porter and Half Cycle IPA.

Somehow a box of Heavy Seas made it into my garage after New Years. We’ll be drinking that, too.

Also expect a lot of live tweeting … and who wants to bet some beers on the game?

    GO COLTS!!!

Dems Fightin’ Words as far as my brother is concerned! I think Jim’s run will be quite a bit shorter this year than last. One thing is certain they are not getting around Tom Brady and the Pats, if they make it that far, neither are the Colts for that matter.

Oh, and impressive line up! Wish I could come to your place for the game! Have a great weekend.

      • January 7, 2011 at 11:19 am #

Oh! We also have a bottle of Rogue Hazelnut John John Ale that I’ve been waiting to open until a girlfriend of mine could join me since it’s our favorite buddy beer to drink together!

          Awesome. Enjoy it!

I’m pretty sure I’ll be drinking my own salty tears if the Packers lose.

    • January 7, 2011 at 11:56 am #

You and Don both. I’m rooting for them, but it’s gonna be a hard game to watch (for you, not for me – what do I care? My team will probably be eliminated by them).

We are rooting for the Packers Jim, not the Colts. 😉

Too bad it’s in Philly. We’ll miss the obligatory “Half Naked Women in Foam Cheese Bras”.

Go Pack Go! It’s a late Sunday game, and supposed to be below zero with the wind chill here in the icebox we call Minnesota, so i think it’ll be a (nurced) bottle of Night Stalker from Goose Island to settle the pre and in-game jitters. 4th & 26 shall be avenged! Pack by 10!

Yes 4th and 26 is a well known play in my household too! I think AJ Hawk and Clay Mathews won’t allow that again!

I’m brewing up a PranQster clone Saturday evening and my buddy is bringing his smoker over for some REAL BBQ. He is quick to correct people that claim they BBQ when all they really do is grill. I guess that makes him a BBQdouchicus. I’m not sure what we will drink, but Total Wine just sent me their monthly $2/off a six pack or 22oz bottle priced $6.99 or higher. I’m still amazed they can sell me a six pack of amazing craft beer for as little as $4.99. I’ll probably use the coupon to stock up on seasonal brews that will disappear soon like Celebration Ale and some limited release like Lukcy Basardt (amazing beer, btw). I supposed since we’re brewing a Belgian Golden Strong Ale I should get a couple examples of the style, we’ll see.

I love coupons…they are like free money!

I grew up in Eastern PA and have never let go of my sports allegiances, so GO EAGLES!

I’ll be drinking Victory Hop Devil and Old Horizontal during the game. I’m hoping that translates into Aaron Rodgers being horizontal for much of the game as well. 😉

I had Hop Devil a few weeks ago and loved it. Very nice IPA. My local beer store just started carrying Victory. I tried their Storm King and I got a contaminated batch. It was absolutely terrible. I’ll have to try the Prima Pils because I have read good things about it.

That’s interesting . . . I tried Storm King for the first time a few weeks ago and I thought it was pretty terrible. Maybe I had a bad batch as well. I had been really looking forward to trying it and was very disappointed. I should give Storm King another try.

You might want to try some Devil Dog from Laughing Dog Brewery, as I’m sure the ghosts of those pooches will have their way with Vick on Sunday! m MWAHAHAAA

Touche, Don. I’m hoping that the ghost of Brett Favre inhabits Rodgers during crunch time and he throws a back-breaking interception. The way the Eagles’ defense is playing, that may be their only chance!

A big http://www.sadtrombone.com/ for the end of the Eagles’ season. The future looks bright, though. Good luck, Packers. You’ll need it.

Well Alex, you knew that the Michael Vick thing had to run its course, and thanks to Dom Capers and Tramon Williams, it did! I was never so glad to see an interception in my life! Now you know How I have felt so many years being a Packers, and a Brett Favre fan! I’m trying to get him to send me an autographed copy of his junk! So far no go. Go figure!

  7. January 7, 2011 at 3:45 pm #

Man, football ended Tuesday night for me. Go Bucks!

    • Don
      January 7, 2011 at 4:29 pm #

Sorry Man. However, you should try just watching anyway. It can be relaxing when you don’t have a dog in the fight…oops forgive the Michael Vick reference.

      • January 7, 2011 at 4:33 pm #

Nice. Two-year-olds make football watching difficult. And my wife needs a break from the sport. Still, I’m sure I’ll round up something nice to drink.

  8. January 7, 2011 at 8:44 pm #

I have only two things to say to the packer fans here. The BEARS won the division! Two, damn you and my need for New Glarus. I shouldn’t have to make the trip to Woodmans!

Good luck against the surging Seahawks next week. Man did their offence look high powered. It will be an interesting match up. And yes John, you are correct the Da Bearse won the division…this year, but fortunately the Packers had a late season run to get in on the wildcard. I’d love to see the two go head to head, but first there is a little blood letting that has to happen down in Georgia.

I didn’t have any specific lineup prior to the weekend but I did enjoy a number of great libations; Sam Smith Nut Brown, St. Bernardus ABT 12, Firestone Walker 14, Widmer Bros Brrrbon, Rogue Nut Brown and in whiskey it was Paddy Irish, 1988 Weller Special Reserve, Elmer T. Lee 15 yr, ’75 JW Dant Charcoal Perfected Whiskey, 2008 Julio’s Rock Hill Farms and Wild Turkey Russells Reserve 10/101. I know this sounds like a lot but between a Friday tasting of beer and whiskey along with some normal weekend indulging, I had a full dance card.

      January 10, 2011 at 10:58 am #

Impressive line up Greg! How did you like the Brrrbon? I have one in the bunker, but have heard it isn’t as good in the bottle as it is on tap. Fortunately (or not) I haven’t tried it on tap yet so I won’t have that to color my perception of the brew. Was it any good?

      • January 10, 2011 at 11:21 am #

Don – it was much lighter in color than I anticipated. My mistake was drinking the Brrrbon after Firestone 14 which blew everything else away. It was good but I think I may have to revisit this one.
