Why Beer is Better Than Whiskey

Oh boy, this is gonna peeve Don to no end an potentially spark an internal BLOG WAR right here on our site.  You can imagine my excitement! 🙂

I’ve written here before about the potential health benefits of craft beer, which offers proteins, flavonoids and other nutrients that can do a body good when consumed in moderation (I had to look that last word up).

I recently ran across a list of the differences between beer and whiskey on a site called differencebetween.net.  While they cover the basic differences between ingredients and how each is made, the real difference they hit upon are health benefits.  Turns out that while craft beer is good for you, whiskey kills.

Okay, maybe I’m overstating it a bit, but whiskey has none of the nutritional benefits of craft beer and its high ethanol content can lead to cancer.  Beer one, whiskey zero.  Whiskey is also a blood thinner, which may or may not be a good thing.

So there you have it – scientific proof that beer is better for your health than whiskey.  Add in the variety, accessibility, affordability and overall awesomeness of my favorite beverage (I am the Beer Brother, after all), and I think it’s pretty clear that beer is far superior to whiskey in just about any way.

Trolling complete – any thoughts Don?  🙂

Pathetic. Really Jim, Its come to this? Throwing dirt clods at me? How about this, Whiskey doesn’t kill, and when taken in moderation (just like Beer) it is lower in calories and it tastes good, and there are lots of varieties too, although the differences are more within a style instead of being all over the map like beer.

I don’t know why I dignified this pathetic attempt to insight a riot, with a response. Probably because for whatever reason some people might actually listen to you.

That’s what brothers do, Don – we throw dirt clods, snow balls, roadkill, whatever at each other.

I bet there’s also a lower instance of alcoholism with beer compared to whiskey, and no one had ever been afflicted with beer dick.

Now you’re just making shit up! You have no idea about alcoholism…ahem it was Mom that called you an alcoholic not me. So I rest my case, Mom knows her boys, you’re the alchie, not me. You’re the beer guy, and I’m the whiskey guy, Hmmmm…seems to blow a bunch of holes in all your arguments. And I know Beer dick exists…

        • August 24, 2010 at 2:06 pm #

Mom was taken aback by the amount of beer I purchased, not realizing I was buying for four people and a host of company that would be parading through the house in the coming week. Once she figured it out she was cool. But I did enjoy her reaction. 🙂

And I’m not making stuff up, I’m being insightful. How many homeless guys do you see with a can of Dale’s Pale Ale? My case is rested!!

It’s called value, Jim, and Homeless people need to be acutely aware of value in their alcohol purchases. That is why Old Crow and Early Times are over-represented in the drunk population, because they are a good value.

BTW Jim, I’ve seen a lot of drunk people hanging onto forties, the Big Gulp of Beer.

Let’s agree that they drink wine – why else are they called winos?

Well on that we can agree. Mogan David Is cheap and tastes good

See, leave it to the whiskey guy to know what hooch will get you drunk for cheap. Beer wins!!

I’ll check back when the steel cage is erected.

      • August 25, 2010 at 11:16 am #

All it’d take is a wet paper bag, Brandon. I don’t think either of us could fight our way out of that!

Let me interject for a minute… beer is better, because the vast majority of beers have hops.

    • August 24, 2010 at 3:44 pm #

Aha! Great point, Tex. Those delicious nuggets aren’t found in whiskey!

      • August 24, 2010 at 4:09 pm #

Leave it to the Texan… 😉

OK, while you two are having your little love in here, let me point out a couple of things. First, Whiskey is distilled making it better than beer, second what makes Beer better? Whiskey! Whether you back a beer with a whiskey, or you age a beer in a used whiskey barrel Whiskey makes beer better because it is whiskey. Finally, While I am a lover of the hop, there are so many different varieties, some hops make beer taste worse and some better, so just because it has hops in it doesn’t automatically make it better. Whiskey wins!

False. My avatar says it all.

  3. August 24, 2010 at 4:49 pm #

I’m fairly neutral on this, but it’s a bit disingenuous to say hops aren’t good because sometimes they’re bad. Sometimes the barrel makes whiskey too sweet, does that make the barrel bad?

Whiskey gets points for being hardcore. Imagine Deadwood, but instead of slugging whiskey, they’ve got Pliny the Elder. No, that won’t do.

Beer gets points for variety. There’s more craft beer available to most of us than interesting whiskey.

Whiskey wins points for accompanying blues and cigars better.

Beer quenches thirst better; there’s no such thing as a “lawnmower whiskey”

They are equally fun words to say.

Life gets less fun without either.

    I give up.

Great Comment Greg! I think I win tho, because while my son’s mow the lawn I drink Whiskey. So you see there is “Lawnmower Whiskey”. It’s just all in the approach!

Great concept… lawnmower whiskey. You seem to be on to something, Don.

    • August 24, 2010 at 5:19 pm #

Nice response Greg. There used to be some folks that used the term ‘lawnmower whiskey,” but they all died of blood loss due to mechanical trauma to their feet.

  4. August 24, 2010 at 5:20 pm #

Maybe you’re right Don. Maybe we shouldn’t be talking about which is better, but how they make each other better. Beer is sometimes better with whiskey, and whiskey is nearly undrinkable without a good beer backing it.

Just keep throwing out the falsehoods Jim, someone is bound to listen.

You are the master of the backhanded compliment.

  5. August 24, 2010 at 10:13 pm #

This is like the “is the glass half full or is the glass half empty?” debate. My answer to both of these conundrums is, “it depends”. Let me explain…

If you fill an empty glass half way, it’s half full. If you empty a full glass half way, it’s half empty. As far as “which is better, beer or whisky?”, my answer is again, it depends. Since I love them both very deeply, I’d say it depends on the situation. If there’s beer around, I’m drinking beer. If there’s whisky around, I’m drinking whisky. And if there happens to be whisky AND beer around, then I’m certainly going to drink both of them!

Does that answer your question? 😉

    Great debate! Drink ON!

    G-LO

Yes, but which one do you prefer to be around?

      • August 26, 2010 at 12:29 am #

Damn! Guess I didn’t answer your question completely. If I had to choose, I guess I’d go with whisky.

          Thank You! Case Closed! 🙂

It wasn’t “case closed” when Tex went all in on beer!!
