Have you ever had something good happen when you were expecting something …um..not so good? For example have you ever had your best friend come up to you and explain he needs you to go on a blind date? That he has met the woman of his dreams only she wouldn’t go out with him unless her friend with the “great personality” could double date with you. So….you grit your teeth and take one for the team and let him know in no uncertain terms that he “Owes you big time”. Well what if the friend was someone like Megan Fox? You may form a whole new opinion of the world. Well that is what happened to me…
Figuratively of course! But the truth was that I wasn’t really expecting to like Fighting Cock Bourbon 6 year old a very raw offering from the folks at Heaven Hill Distilleries. But after having drank it for the last two nights I must say it is a fun and spicy little pour that I enjoy quite a bit.
It begins with a rather harsh nose. Lots of alcohol, some pepper, and a tinge of honey. The honey smell increases as the bourbon sits in the glass and opens up. As you sniff this bourbon it actually goes into the blood vessels in the nose and begins to clear the sinuses. This is not for the faint of heart! When it hits the palate there is an immediate and overwhelming pepper and spice that fills your mouth. The high alcohol content clears your sinuses and then…let the burn begin! This is very young and HOT! The burn is pronounced and lasts for a couple of minutes. It actually gives me a flushed feeling and caused my forehead to glisten! That said, it is unlike any other bourbon I have ever had!
Neat
Hold on to your Butts!! Man this thing is untamed and rockin’. Huge spice and alcohol makes it seem more like it came right off the still! If it didn’t say six years I wouldn’t believe it. I would also guess that the char level of the barrels for this particular bourbon is pretty low. Not much wood or char in the flavor.
On the Rocks
Rocks are a must for this, and turns it from a raging rodeo bull down to just a bucking bronco. Still huge spice and burn. The nose takes a turn with cooling.
With a Splash
Still has good spice and a peppery finish. This is strong juice and holds up well. Its burn is still sizable and this stuff just keeps kicking.
I must say this is raw juice. It just kicks like a bull and has great spice notes. It isn’t overly complex, but a typical adolescent. This is fun stuff and you should give it a try. At $15 for a fifth it won’t set you back too much for a walk on the wild side.
