We’re two brothers separated by 2,500 miles of America and united by a love of beer and whiskey.
Jim is the beer geek, with a true passion for big character beers and the brewers with the guts to make them. He also writes about craft beer for the Today Show’s website and FSR Magazine, a glossy restaurant industry publication.
Don is the whiskey guy, with a palate like fine food critic and a love for all things whiskey; the history, the distilling process, and the drinking. Especially the whiskey drinking! He also has opened the Idaho Hop House, a craft beer mecca in Nampa, Idaho.
Beer & Whiskey Brothers is our chance to celebrate the amazing variety of really special brews and batches that continue to emerge at a wonderfully rapid pace, and to talk about life as beer and whiskey lovers just trying to keep up with it all.
In the mix you will get to know both of us and how we are alike and how we are different. Quick list of differences:
1) Jim is more liberal, Don is more conservative
2) Jim is on the East Coast in New Jersey, Don is out west in Idaho
3) Jim is more metrosexual, Don is more of a gun totin’, flannel wearin’ redneck

Beyond that we have the same parents, we’re both married, we both have families and houses with mortgages, and we both pay our taxes. We can promise you that you will not agree with us all the time, hell we don’t even agree with each other half the time, but we always try to make the site fun and enjoyable, and maybe even a little informative.

I follow your site occasionally, and I felt compelled to post here. I had my first Scotch lesson this evening. A friend lined up 4 different bottles and basically explained the difference between blended and single malt (we had 2 of each) and being a beer guy I had a little trouble with them all at first but began to see the differences. JW black, Green and two SMs (one I forget and the last was a glenlivit 16yr I think) anyway, roughly ordered by price. Interesting, I must say and if it wasnt so expensive, I could get into it more. I will be following your blog a bit more closely now that I understand the genre a bit more.

My Grandfather left me 3 bottler of Glenlivet 12 yr old single malt scotch whiskey. My Grandfather had these bottles forever sitting in his liquor cabinet, from what my Grandmother said. Any way of telling how old this whiskey is? He has been dead for 4 yrs. I know it is at least 16yrs old if he bought it right before he died at 94.

Rusty, on the bottom of the bottle there should be a number that corresponds to the year the bottle was made. So if there is an 87 on the bottom of the bottle it means the bottle was manufactured in 1987. Typically bottles are filled within the years they are made. You might be off by a vintage year if it was bottled early in that year and the bottles were purchased late in the previous year, but by and large you can estimate that the year on the bottom of the bottle corresponds pretty closely with the vintage of the whisky within. So look at your bottles, they might have some pretty interesting Whisky inside!

I don’t collect beer precisely, I just buy more than I drink and have a garage full of surplus brews, most good stuff. I’m not even sure what’s out there anymore. So I guess you could say I’m an accidental collector.

I think what you do is harder and more important than our drivel – being a local resource for beer nerds is a great service to provide. I’m just getting into whiskey! So far the one I can stomach the most is Wild Turkey Rare Breed. I even crave it now! My boyfriend got me into it. Other than that, beer (and the occasional glass of red wine) is the only alcohol I drink. I nice punch-you-in-the-gut IPA just makes my belly happy (despite, or perhaps because of, the gut-punching)!
Love Rare Breed. Also try Four Roses Small Batch – very tasty – it’s the only whiskey I crave (and that’s why I don’t keep it in the house!)
I love wheat beers and scotch. So I guess I’m a beer and whiskey kinda guy too.

My name is Kristian Day and I am the director of the documentary, Capone’s Whiskey: The Story of Templeton Rye. I was wondering if you would be interested in seeing an online screener for the movie? We are going to be playing the film in Chicago for the week of Whiskey Fest (March 23rd) and we want to create a nice buzz for the film ahead of time. We had two screenings of the film in Des Moines, IA at the Fleur Cinema & Cafe. The premiere was on December 4th (eve of the repeal of prohibition) with 160 attendees. We had an encore screening on December 18th with 110 attendees.
The movie tells the story of the farmers who made Templeton Rye during prohibition and the depression in order to save their farms. It also shows the world that the illegal whiskey is still being made today and can live side by side the legal product.

I am a huge beer and whiskey (and whisky) fan myself, which works out well in my role managing the food and beverage program at Frontier Airlines. I’d love to get your thoughts on the selections we’ve made recently. I posted the web-link with my contact info.
Well, I’ll leave the booze to Don, but the beer selection is a little weak, Brian, ESPECIALLY for an airline out of Colorado! I understand you have to please middle America, but do you really need Coors Light and Miller Light? Where’s the Dales?!! 🙂
Brian, I must concur with my Brother Jim, the Beer selection is four light lagers and Fat Tire, which defies categorization but is generally not too great. You have a lot of great canned beers to choose from, Dales, Joes Pilsner, Ellie’s Brown Ale, Ten Fidy! Spice it up a bit and you’ll make a lot of geeks happy. As for your spirits, your whiskey selections are pretty solid. I love the fact that you have JD single Barrel, and Glenlivet, and Jameson’s. Those are great. Canadian Club is an inferior whiskey. If you want Canadian, I’d recommend a Pendleton or even a Crown Royal. As for your Bourbon, Makers is a pretty safe bet, but I’d much prefer something with some flavor like Wild Turkey 101, or even Rare Breed is sold in 50 ml bottles. That would amp things up quite a bit from my perspective. You might want to try something like Horizon Air does too and have a revolving beer and wine of the month where they promote a local wine or beer made in the Northwest. Good luck.
Appreciate your feedback- all very good points. The Dale’s was actually an item that was on board at one time prior to Frontier’s merger with Midwest. When we combined the onbaord offerings, we eliminated items that were performing below average from a sales perspective. Dale’s always ran at a distant 3rd place (of 4) on Frontier and with a network growing beyond Denver that appeared unlikely to improve. Similarly, Leinenkugel’s did great out of Milwaukee, but virtually never sold anywhere in the western US. As a result, both of these items were eliminated from the lineup. To give you an idea of the customer preferences we have today, the popularity of our beers skews heavily towards the light lagers- Coors Light and Miller Lite make up almost 50% by themselves. Fat Tire would be next, at times displacing one of the light lagers that would drop to 3rd. The two remaining selections come in at the rear, but vary from month to month as passenger demographics change. One of the biggest challenges we have is maintaining availability of the product nationwide. While we are based in Colorado, there are some pretty large bases of operation in the midwest and eastern US, without nationwide distribution maintaining a supply of true craft beers on board is a real challenge. We certainly wanted to have the best lineup out there for an airline- while admittedly that may leave a little to be desired for a true conessiour.

I’m a craft beer guy myself and keep a few beers in a cellar at home … Every so often I’ll open one up an blog about it (my blog is at matttoll.wordpress.com, although it’s not a beer blog per se) just for kicks. Not sure how much you discuss cellaring here but I’ve enjoyed letting some beers mature for a few years – creates some really interesting new characteristics over time. (Also suspense.)

Do you guys know how businesses are able to send beer to consumers?
Reading through several beer-of-the-month club websites, the Brewforia website and some others – they all claim to be using UPS & FedEx, though both couriers’ Terms of Use say that they won’t ship beer to consumers (just wine).
Is it just a matter of staying under the radar? Is there a way to ship beer to consumers that is legal and safe for a business?
Try Brewforua, Dustin. I think it’s a matter of what state you live in.
I’ve sent Brewforia an e-mail asking how they ship beer but I’m not really looking to receive any myself. I’m working with a local bottle shop on expanding to selling some brews online and I’m not sure how safe it is for a business to ship beer.
I know some states don’t allow consumers to receive alcohol but it seems that is superseded by the policies of UPS & FedEx that states that they won’t ship beer direct to consumers, at all. They’ll ship wine but both courier companies claim they won’t ship beer or spirits. All of the places I’ve found online say they ship via UPS & FedEx, so I was just wondering if you guys had any insight on that.
Are you suggesting that the couriers possibly alter that policy state-by-state?
I think you can find a carrier to ship it for you (especially if you aren’t explicit about contents). I get samples and beer of the month club shipments from the big boys in a state that’s not beer-in-the-mail friendly, but as the consumer, I don’t assume legal risk.
In other words, your question is best answered by a lawyer, not a beer blogger. 🙂

My husband was recently asked by his doctor to try a gluten free diet, so we’ve been experimenting with products (btw, you can be sensitive to gluten without having full-blown celiac disease — I’ve read that it’s the most common food allergy. Also, oats are ok if they’re not milled on the same machinery as wheat, barley or rye).
So far, we’ve only tried 2 beers. One was as forgettable as most you tried. The other was Green’s Amber Ale from Gent, Belgium, which we voted good enough to drink even if you didn’t have to. It’s made from millet, buckwheat, rice, and sorghum. (Of course, if you didn’t have to, there are so many even more interesting choices.)
I think that’s the standard for a gluten-free beer: It’s good enough to drink even if you don’t have to. Unfortunately, few qualify.
PS, My husband was thrilled to find out that distilled spirits (whiskey and whisky) are ok!

I have fond memories of spending a couple of hours before a flkight out of Tampa at Cigar City Brewery. It’s really small, two overhead garage doors but they have a tasting room worth the visit. JaiAli is still one of my favorites and I am an IOPA fan. Love your blog.

what do you know about “Klingon Warnog”? Just saw it on GMA this morning.
It’s a cute offering contract brewed in Indiana and licensed by Star Trek. I think it’s a rye lager, and is supposed to be a decent beer. Mostly it’s a marketing thing, a follow up to their Vulcan Ale that was released last year in Canada. The guy behind it is a Canadian dentist who’s a Star Trek fan – very nice fella.
