My Weekend SUCKS: What Are You Drinking?

Some of you may have noticed that I have been a little scarce on the blog over the last month or so.  That is because I had a convergence of a most unfortunate type at work.  Five projects that were all going along on their own just fine, decided to all have deadlines within one month of each other.  It is easy to keep all the balls in the air, but catching them all at once is a bigger challenge.  So I have been working a lot and trying to keep up at least some presence on the blog.  This has meant a lot of late nights and weekends sitting right here typing in my 10’x10′ cell they call an office! …

Well this weekend I will be back here working right through like it is any other weekday, which unfortunately means not a lot of drinking for me.  As a matter of fact I have had a couple of things that were interesting, including a Barleywine with a hoppy spin to it from Great Divide, and an Old Whiskey River, Kentucky Straight Bourbon that was pretty tasty too, but I’ve been so busy at work, I haven’t had time to write them up and get them posted on the blog.

This weekend, I’ll be lucky to get a beer or two in me between driving the 40 miles to work each way and sitting here working for 10 hours a day this weekend.  If I’m lucky I’ll get to a couple of interesting brews.  I have a couple waiting for me like a great Barleywine from Midnight Sun, and a Winterwarmer from O Nogne that is aged in Islay Scotch Barrels.  So good things available, just no time to unwind and enjoy.

How about you?  I’m hoping that you aren’t in the same boat as me, and can actually spend some time at home with friends or family and relax with a favorite beverage.  Does anyone have any holiday parties they are going to?  What will you be drinking?  As usual, let us know in the comments, and have a great weekend everyone…I won’t.

I don’t know Don, I really don’t have a lot planned. I’ll probably relax, take a nap, spend some quality time with my family and generally just enjoy the fact that I have so much free time on my hands.

As far as what I’ll be drinking, well there are a lot of really awesome beers that I can get out here that aren’t available in Idaho. I’ll be enjoying those, and reflecting upon my good fortune while relaxing quietly and doing whatever else I please.

Good for you little Bro! If I believed that I might be jealous, but I know your house is at least as chaotic as mine on the weekend! However your mancave beckons at 9pm for Top Gear, Cheese and Triscuits, and a nice toe curler stout. Enjoy!

Well, my wife and I are having our third annual party at the house to collect toys for the local toy drive so I’ll be drinking plenty (it’s an 8am party till at least midnight).

I know quite a few more beer geeks this year than I have in the past so there’s gonna be a lot that comes out of my collection and likely a few that others bring as well.

Last year we had 115 people and hope to exceed it this year so LOTS of beer will be flowing including this on tap:

Cheers guys, hope you have a great weekend!

Sounds great Mikey, and make sure they give till it hurts! Those kids need the support. Great Idea having a big party to collect things for the kiddies. Others should embrace your ingenuity. Have a great time.

Great idea. I know I’d bring a Tickle Me Elmo if it meant I got to play in your cellar (or one of your many international beer caches).

I have some Boulevard Wheat in the fridge for the weekend. And I’ll be hooking up my new Mac. And watching “Gigli” in the hopes that it’s sooooo bad that it can be turned into a cult hit in the same way that “Troll 2″ became a cult hit.

    • December 3, 2010 at 12:58 pm #

      Boulevard=good. Wheat=bad. Mac=cool. Gigli=WTF?

      • December 3, 2010 at 3:31 pm #

You scoff now, but just wait until I’ve started the world’s only annual screening of Gigli, at GigliFest.

You’re gonna need a lot of PBR for all those hipsters, John.

        Hahaha… OUCH.

        (and yet so totally true)

You know paper is a wonderful fire starter. ;)

My weekend is totally empty, but I’ve got a large bottle of Dogfish Head – Theobroma. It’s been awhile so I’m eager to be able to bring those taste buds out of hibernation. I’ll have a drink for you.

    Have fun!

Enjoy the DFH. Perhaps you can catch an episode of Brew Masters while you sip on that wonderful brew!

Don – funny thing about your post, I was just thinking we haven’t heard from you and that the recent posts have been leaning a lot toward beer (it’s ok Jim, you’ve been keeping things on track). I, for one, would like to see more posts on whiskey but understand your situation. I have three events coming up, two dinner party’s that will include bourbon drinking and a tasting that I’ll be hosting with a theme of toward prohibition; bring a bourbon as close to 1933 as possible OR bring a bottle you would hate to lose if prohibition were ever brought back. Should be interesting. As for what we’ll be drinking, well a good sampling of single barrel/barrel proof private selection bourbons and hopefully something distilled close to 1933.

Sounds great Greg. Hopefully you will get some of those really old bourbons! What a treat.

I work for a shipping company, so work has been pretty stressful, but I just finished a month on call and it is time to celebrate with a growler of Mad Elf.

    • Don
      December 3, 2010 at 1:48 pm #

Wow, don’t tell Jim where to get growlers of Mad Elf. He’ll drink it all before you get the chance to fill yours!

      • December 3, 2010 at 2:24 pm #

No I won’t! Now, Heather, just tell me where to point the tanker…er…I mean car…

Sorry fellas, I picked it up last Friday, so I’m sure the shop is out by now.

Just to let you know Jim is not above Jedi mind tricks to 1) get that location, and 2) get your growler!

        • December 3, 2010 at 5:35 pm #

          :(

Guess I’ll just have to suffer through the case and a half I have left.
          ;)

Poor Don. Just know you’re missed around here (by me anyway).

I’ve got my own bottle of Mad Elf in the fridge and also a bottle of the Gouden Carolus Noel chilling as well. I love those Belgian Christmas ales!

I’m at home with my 2 year old son this weekend while mommy parties down in Southern CA. I’m going to brew a triple base malt IPA and after work I’m going to pick up another Sierra Nevada 30th Jack & Ken’s Ale. I had it the other night and I instantly fell in love. It is rich, hoppy and just pure liquid awesome.

Speaking of two year olds, there are few things cuter than when I am having a tasty beverage and my son says, “oh, beer daddy?” But beer sounds more like “beeruh” in the sweet little kid voice. I think too many parents are afraid to teach their children responsible drinking by example, but that’s a rant for another post.

    • December 3, 2010 at 3:02 pm #

My kids (9 and 4) have been sticking their noses in my beers for years. They say what scents they can pick up and often surprise me with their take on it. I’ve offered sips, but they run away, saying beer is gross and for grown ups. Their right about the latter, but WRONG about the former.

Sorry to hear about the deadlines, Don. i’ve been working a lot more these past few months than i have in years and know what kind of pressure that can exert on other areas, so good luck juggling all those balls.

On the bright side, there’s a cocktail party every Friday in the reception area of my company and so i get to drink Heinie with my coworkers and we get along well, so it’s a nice way to unwind after the hectic. Hope you’re able to let your hair down as well!

      December 4, 2010 at 2:28 pm #

That sounds nice, but unfortunately, I live 40 miles from work, so cocktail parties at the office don’t do much for me.

  10. December 3, 2010 at 7:53 pm #

    Yo Don!

You’re work situation ain’t cool at all! If it’s any consolation, I am pretty much screwed for the next 6 months once January hits.

As far as this weekend’s imbibing, perhaps a panel tasting of the 2010 Brooklyn Chocolate Stout followed by some bourbon and/or Single Malts tonight. Sunday night will be a visit to PJ’s Pourhouse in Westmont, NJ for a beer or four. They have an excellent rotating selection of craft beers on tap (16 of them!) plus oodles of bottles too. Gonna also try to fit in a tasting of DFH Bitches Brew which is chillin in the fridge. It’s all in the name of blog research afterall! Oh… and I also have to get the Christmas tree up and decorated before my wee hombres beat the snot out of me.

Try to sneak in a beverage this weekend and follow your own motto, i.e. “Keep in good spirits…”, etc etc.

    Peace Yo!

Last night (Late) I had a buddy come over and we smoked cigars in the garage and drank a couple brews. I got a Ninkasi Sleighr which was a malty treat that was soooo smooth and easy drinking, and a Great divide Hibernation Ale, which again was malty and a little higher ABV, so it didn’t have the smoothness of the Sleighr but was a nice brew nonetheless in its own right. So I am here at work, sleep deprived and blogging before I dive in for the next ten hours. Maybe I’ll take a pinch of the hard stuff tonight when I get home. Enjoy setting up the tree…I always hate that. :-/

      • December 4, 2010 at 11:06 pm #

        Yo Don!

Way to sneak in some booze and fun into an otherwise “Bah Humbug!” weekend. As I told one of the wives during this morning’s Breakfast with Santa, “a social and well lubricated husband, is a happy husband!”. Not sure if she was amused. Such is life!

Last night’s selections included Bookers, Springbank 10, and Macallan 10 Fine Oak. Tonight was a Great Lakes Burning River American Pale Ale. Quite a tasty brew! Deserves a second try and a blog post.

        Peace Yo!

That World Wide Stout may hit the spot for one night it looks like! Dont work to hard this weekend Don, you may need a good glass of Balvenie to calm the nerves.
Hey do you guys wana go halfs on that Brewdog Tactical Nuclear Penguin? They got it at the liquer store I go to?

      • December 5, 2010 at 1:36 pm #

It’s gonna take at least that much – I can’t bear to watch my Jets face those nasty Pats!

Broncos are on the way to getting the First Round Draft Pick! But McDummy will probably pick another QB.

Go Jets but I do want Tom Brady’s hair though.
