OK I wanted to wait to announce this on my own blog, but here: I have brewed a 113% abv beer. Top that.

You can’t drink this, as it’s in concentrated powder form. But let me tell you, doing hoppy rails off a hooker’s ass is amazing.

Dogfish Head World Wide Stout and 120 Minute IPA are both about 18% and both are clearly still beers. Utopias might start off being a beer, but it turns into something magical during the aging process. Perhaps they use Unicorn tears?

Ahhhh, but thats the difference though, isn’t it? Utopias is actually brewed to it’s 22-ish%. No, using an Eisbock method to cold distill it, just a lot of time and loving your yeast to nurture it to get above the 20% mark. IMO, Utopias is still the worlds strongest beer, even then I still do not know if should be considered a beer.

BrewDog’s offerings are basically cold distilled, concentrated by freezing the beer and then removing the ice, which is water, as the alcohol doesn’t freeze. This is done a number of times to remove the non-alcoholic fluid from the beer, thus boosting ABV. It’s an interesting trick, but not one that makes a great beer.

And I don’t really care about what the beverage is called, just if it’s any good. You can call Sam Adams Utopias whatever you want, I call it delicious.

I may be wrong here, it has been known on a couple of occasions throughout my life, but I always thought that ‘brewing’ could only get the strength (abv) to a maximum of 15-20% and anything beyond that needed a process of distillation?

So how come these silly drinks are playing a numbers game up at 60% abv and still claiming them to be ‘brewed beers’?

But 60% eclipses many fine bourbons, some of which are quite hot and potent. I’d love to try it, but I’m guessing there’s better ways to spend $45.
